Washing pots in Bleach.

I was helping out cleaning in someone's kitchen. Unfortunately they'd had to be away for an emergency and their house was left in a state.

There were some mouldy items, scum floating on the water and everything stunk. I ended up bleaching everything. I then washed in really hot water. I rinsed everything really well but the person kicked up a fuss about everything we'd done to help

Is this wrong/dangerous to health etc? What should I have done? There wasn't a dishwasher and the dishes/cutlery stunk.

Forget to bleach for a moment- you was helping out and cleaned the rank kitchen and then they kicked off because you used something they dont approve of?
Tell them to fuck off and clean their own kitchen themselves next time.

I'm a bit of an anti-bleacher, it would freak me out if someone was using it in my kitchen. I doubt I'd say anything though, if a friend was helping, or I'd desperately try not to. It does sound like she normally has a very clean and tidy house and she's come back from some kind of trauma/emergency to a pig sty. That would set me off and I would be seriously stressed and grouchy. Mess, dirt, and disorder really are my kryptonite. Seems like she's making amends by apologising and asking you over. I'd say no harm done.

Thanks. Glad bleach is safe to use. My friend rinses everything with clean water to get rid of any trace of detergent as she says it can taint the food.

I thought bleach would get rid of the smell and also kill the germs.

Bleach seems like a good idea, I use it in stained mugs too OP, as long as it's washed off don't see what the fuss is.

OP and her friends were washing up mouldy crockery, tidying up and buying her shopping. How does that equate to someone coming home to a pig sty?

I agree, I might be so stressed by coming home with friends to a house that has mouldy pots, bin bags, smells. Plus whatever emergency I have been dealing with. I'd get overwhelmed and react badly to the loss of dignity, control etc.

She's apologised, let it go.

Changeschangechangeagain · 08/09/2017 22:29

I'm going to let it go. I'm glad she text though. I'm looking forward to pizza and wine tomorrow.

Yes, a bad day. She was probably embarrased as well as tired and grouchy and stressed as her life was in a spin. Bleach makes me feel icky too, but it is easily forggotten.

Enjoy your wine and pizza tomorrow :)
