to buy a convertible

When I could buy a family car... said convertible is small, two doors, no boot and I have a 4 yo.
Points for- I get to tart about like a right Wally in a new convertible which has heaters round the neck and boiling hot seats so I can drive around with the roof down as long as the sun is out. I've never owned a convertible so could be being a bit naive though.
I rarely have passengers but the car has 4 full adult seats. I don't use my boot. I am so lazy I put my shopping on front seat always. I shop every day as I'm too disorganised to remember to buy what I need have an addiction to supermarkets
I have always wanted one and wish I'd owned it before 4yo but no good looking back!

Against - I have a 4 yo. Feel guilty about buying impractical car that isn't a 4x4 or whatever the safest thing is out there... have driven lots of family cars but never feel like I want one.
It's raining heavy now. Highlights the use of a convertible in the uk. Roofs are fairly useful on a car.

Thanks all. Still debating. Is no light decision as won't be able to afford to swap it in under a year as depreciation is pretty steep on the convertibles which I know full well I'll lose money on it but kind of want the experience. Ahh so confused.
And shit it's gone midnight. 9am to decide as have already got a lovely discount as new plates are out and this is on the forecourt already. Only other car I actually liked was the evoque and I'd been round 4 garages. Was a bit depressing. I shall let you know what happens in the morning as taking the 4yo with me do should be an experience in itself Grin

I have one. I love it.

Its actually a classic though. Mines a 2 seater. I have 2 kids and if i need to take them somewhere i used dhs car.

Its quite impractical. But i love it.

Have you considered getting nearly new? The list price of my car is £20k more than I paid for it at 18 months old with 5000 miles on. Why does it have to be new? Is it a very specific car you want? (Not criticising you at all BTW, just interested).

Orangebird69 · 09/09/2017 07:28

I'm 30 and look younger so feel could still get away with the roof down without frightening anyone just yet.

Blimey. I didn't realise there was an upper age limit to driving a convertible Hmm

Hissy · 09/09/2017 07:48

Apparently Britain has the highest number of convertible per capita...

Here is actually a perfect country to have them, it's too hot in other places to sit roasting in the sun all summer

I have one, it's a 4 seater, it's perfect

My son says he never wants me to get rid of it. I wouldn't want a non convertible now.

Hissy · 09/09/2017 07:50

Oh and I'm almost 50, I don't look ridiculous at all in it!

Go for it!

BigGreenOlives · 09/09/2017 07:55

Much better to have a convertible here than somewhere it's hot. Have you got dyed hair? You'll need to keep a hat in the car to protect your hair colour. I had a convertible until I had my second child then had to switch to a people carrier. Have a roll top now that's fab.

You'll be disappointed with an Evoque - go for the convertible, you know you want to ...

Orangebird69 · 09/09/2017 08:03

Evoques - just no. Pug ugly.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 09/09/2017 08:22

For the love of god don't get an Evoque convertible! That thing looks like it came straight from the depths of hell ha ha x

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 11/09/2017 13:15

OP where have you gone? What did you decide? Hope you went for the convertible?

alibongo5 · 11/09/2017 13:28

I bought a Mazda MX5 last winter after having practical cars - as an older model it was really cheap and I thought if I didn't like it I could always resell it. so maybe try that first?

I love it and get the hood down whenever I can (the first time was in February and no I wasn't cold, the heater is phenomenal!). If I need a bigger car, I just swap with my husband - he loves driving my car so it's never a problem. I'm not usually a car person but I love my little car.

A work colleague and I now greet each other with "hood down weather" on any day that is not raining!

spongebobpineapplepants · 12/09/2017 07:13

Hey I didn't get it. And no I wasn't looking at evoque convertibles I don't like them. Thanks. The deal was pretty good. I will continue my search but it's still on my list I just need to be 100% I won't regret it for at least until the car doesn't lose much money I want to cry haha. Thanks again

Why don't you hire one for a few days? see what you think?

spongebobpineapplepants · 05/03/2018 11:26

So I know it’s a million years later but I thought I’d update that finally got my convertible. A bmw 4 series. That i drove onto my snowy drive the other day haha. Only on a 6 month lease and then h is apparently getting a practical car Hmm

all I need now is some sunshine. Grin

Well done OP - I was going to say that I had 3 SLKs one after the other and loved them!

The only problem is, nippy little sports cars are a bit addictive, so good luck with going cold turkey in 6 months Smile
