To think if you don't have your railcard then of course your ticket is invalid

Guy lost his wallet and so the train staff told him to buy a new ticket as it wasn't valid. He couldn't as didn't have his wallet. But he's blaming the staff.

Surely they are just following procedure?

This is why it's good to keep a second card outside of your wallet or purse or save a card to your phone. Maybe there should be an emergency ticket type system. Virgin are refunding the extra ticket bought so it's all fine in the end.

I think the point a customer can demonstrate they're disabled by virtue of toting a prosthetic leg would be the point ,regardless of how big a jobsworth you were, you'd give them the benefit of the doubt that they would quite likely own a disabled rail pass.

Unless you were Gary who works at our stations. Gary would insist the fake leg was fake, because in Garyworld every single man, woman and child is out to blag their way onto Network SouthEast. Not on Gary's watch.

Gilead · 08/09/2017 16:30

Ds has been asked to move before now. Even with his disabled persons railcard. He doesn't look disabled sitting down, apparently. He has been asked to show his card before and was once thrown off a train because he'd accidentally got on the one before the one he was supposed to get. They were three minutes apart and he tried to explain that he was disabled but no, he was out to rob them (of what I'm not sure, he had a paid for ticket for the next train going in the same direction). Fortunately, the station at which he was thrown off were kind, made him tea and telephoned me.

Birdsgottafly · 08/09/2017 16:30

""But you don't see how this guy approached it and the train manager obviously wasn't accepting it.""

He never got to speak to the Manager, he was escorted away by the Police before he could explain, on the day so of aother Staff member.

He's Andy Grant, Record Holder for running in the amputee above the knee.

I've been at events he's been at and he comes across as humble, there's been no need for the way he was treated. He was dressed well and wearing a force's pin.

nicolasturgeonGRTRtheresamay · 08/09/2017 16:31

@reetgood I see how this is different. But how can the train staff know that he lost a leg in service and that he is entitled to a rail card and has bought one? It wasn't stolen, it was left behind as he first said but then his story changed to it being stolen.

I'm not angry, I just see it from both sides and only one has expressed their side of the version of events.

Agree it should all be electronic, but the whole ticket system in this country is very out of date.

Where has virgin admitted a mistake? Nothing on his Twitter or on the mail shows this.

OP posts:
ajandjjmum · 08/09/2017 17:18

It could be that it was left behind, and then stolen.

nicolasturgeonGRTRtheresamay · 08/09/2017 17:47

I think that would be classified as lost.

I think the point a customer can demonstrate they're disabled by virtue of toting a prosthetic leg would be the point ,regardless of how big a jobsworth you were, you'd give them the benefit of the doubt

Having a prosthetic leg doesn't mean someone is entitled to a disability rail card. Seeing is he's a record holder I'm sure he would pass the atos test. He's most likely entitled to it as it was during active service. Again another reason why they were put in a very difficult position.

I still can't see any links where virgin have admitted responsibility, like several posters claimed Hmm

Just own it, op, you are another jobsworth

Triggering, my arse

nicolasturgeonGRTRtheresamay · 08/09/2017 18:08

I quite happily admit that I stick to rules and don't like people that think they are above them.

Still think this guy is pushing an agenda.

OP posts:
PaintingByNumbers · 08/09/2017 18:10

That is a pretty good definition of jobsworth, yep

nicolasturgeonGRTRtheresamay · 08/09/2017 18:14

I'll wear it with pride Grin.

I bet it was a MN user that ignored the one way car park system last week and almost smashed into me.

OP posts:
madcatwoman61 · 08/09/2017 18:16

being eligible for a railcard doesn't mean you have one, and if you can't prove you have one, then you are not entitled to a discounted ticket.

reetgood · 08/09/2017 18:17

What agenda is he pushing?

I am amused by you using 'triggered' in relation to someone who sustained life changing injuries in a combat zone.

Belindaboom · 08/09/2017 18:28

OP the disabled railcard has a very loose criteria, nothing to do with atos. I wear hearing aids so am entitled to one - having a prosthesis I'm sure will too.

I think it would have been easier to just let him on the damn train. I can't imagine the disabled rail card is one that people try to fake having often. I've noticed it being asked for more and more now though so they're obviously under more scrutiny.

Also, the whole "he was in the forces" thing has nothing to do with anything.

Belindaboom · 08/09/2017 18:31

*i take it back - not as loose as I remembered. However it's the only discount I've ever come across which you get automatically for a hearing impairment.

cowgirlsareforever · 08/09/2017 18:36

On twitter he says he put it on a table and it was taken. Not sure if he left and went back for it or it was taken from under his nose. Either way it was stolen.

nicolasturgeonGRTRtheresamay · 08/09/2017 18:37

Well it's not loose at all, it's very clear. The atos test is relevant as if he received the injury any other way than in service he wouldn't be entitled to the card as he wouldn't qualify for any of the benefits as he can walk over 200m.

The "used to be in the forces/is a hero" is also very relivant as it helps whip up the story into a daily mail foaming mouth headline and helps give a guy who gives talks for a living more attention.

OP posts:
reetgood · 08/09/2017 18:47

So you're suggesting that he engineered this situation for his benefit?

OR

In the actually more likely scenario...

Might he be using his profile to draw attention to the situation and the issue?

cowgirlsareforever · 08/09/2017 18:57

You really need to take a very long, hard look at yourself nicolasturgeon
The man in question was blown up and lost a leg and gives talks on being positive. You admit to becoming cynical because lots of students asked for discount when you worked in a shop. As I've said, have a long hard look at yourself.

TheFirstMrsDV · 08/09/2017 19:07

The atos test is relevant as if he received the injury any other way than in service he wouldn't be entitled to the card as he wouldn't qualify for any of the benefits as he can walk over 200m

What with the 'triggered' comment, the one about the Blue Badge and now this I am now fairly convinced this thread needs reporting

Belindaboom · 08/09/2017 19:08

he had a photo of his railcard, it's not difficult to show discretion in such a circumstance.

nicolasturgeonGRTRtheresamay · 08/09/2017 19:10

What exactly is the issue? He was the only one in the wrong.

If he was campaigning for electronic rail cards I might not see him in such a cynical light. But no he pulled out a phone and shoved it in someone else's face not showing half of the story and knew the company couldn't win against him even though they are in the right.

Students, oaps, disabled is irrelevant they all need their discount card for it to be valid when traveling on a discounted ticket else will need to buy a new one. Train companies are known be being strict.

OP posts:
Chouetted · 08/09/2017 19:12

Yes you do, Wombling, but only on Anytime tickets, not off-peak, for some reason.

Belindaboom · 08/09/2017 19:12

Yes but he clearly had a ticket! Have you never forgotten something or had something go wrong and someone has shown common sense or been kind?!

RedBlackberries · 08/09/2017 19:23

Hmm goady much OP?

WomblingThree · 08/09/2017 19:49

Thanks @Chouetted.
