Farron and Ball paint

AIBU to be confused by Farron and Ball paints?

Are they any good? And if they are good, are they better enough to be worth the extra cost versus say Dulux or Homebase own brand.

It seems to be a real status symbol to say that all your paintwork is F&B, which is the sort of thing that would put me off. But if there is a good technical reason, they happy to give it a try.

Love the idea of doing base coats in cheaper colour matched stuff and the grande finale in F&B. Top tip PP, thanks!

AllToadsLeadToHome · 07/09/2017 23:56

Dog slobber sounds like a new F&B shade.

DaenerysismyQueen · 07/09/2017 23:57

The intelligent matt paint they do is the best paint out there. I've literally painted a house from top to bottom
and my favourite rooms are the ones with Farrow and Ball paint. I think the original paint (estate I think?) is much harder to use but I've never used it.

Time40 · 07/09/2017 23:57

Yes, they are definitely worth it. The finish is nicer than that of other paints I've tried. I don't know why some decorators say they hate it; I find it very easy to work with.

Gooseberrytart4 · 07/09/2017 23:58

It's thin and watery. Try little greene

bettytaghetti · 08/09/2017 00:09

We used both F&B and Little Greene paints when we decorated our new house. The colours and textures are lovely, but one of the biggest problems we had is when anything needed to be touched up; there was a noticeable difference in the colour of paint, even when using the original pot. As a result the builders had to repaint entire walls, so that's probably helped to achieve the beautiful depth of colour! And explains why they hate the paint so much!
The majority of our walls are LG French grey & fortunately I have been able to wipe them down to some degree, but my kids are older so they haven't been properly toddler-tested!
Some colours went on better than others and had better coverage, but the LG gloss that we used on our front door had to have about 6 coats before it looked okay. Consequently, it looks almost as good as number 10's front door!

Capricorn76 · 08/09/2017 07:10

Little Greene is better quality.

DoubleHelix79 · 08/09/2017 07:20

Don't use cheap own brand paint if you value your time. It really puts the 'pain' in paint (just to make an awful pun referencing the typo above). Used it as a poor student and always ended up needing about four coats.

NorthCoast · 08/09/2017 07:29

It's lovely stuff, but pricey to do a whole house in it and it usually does need two coats, though you can get away with doing one coat as a 50:50 paint and water mix and then putting a paint-only top coat on. Also any DIY store with a Dulux custom colour system can colour match it, though it's not quite the same.

I'm decorating a rental at the moment and have found the Crown Period Collection a pretty good substitute, though nowhere near the same range of colours.

Haint · 08/09/2017 07:32

Actually Johnsons matches, although very good, are only a few £ cheaper. Certainly nothing like half as much

NoParticularPattern · 08/09/2017 07:46

I just use the F&B colours mixed by Valspar. I like the valspar because that shit literally does not leave the wall. Ever. Woe betide you if you drip on the skirting- you're getting the sander out!

FenceSitter01 · 08/09/2017 07:50

No. A close friend was on contract to do the private living accommodation at Lambeth Palace for the Archbishop of Canterbury. He told Mrs Archbishop that F&B was shite and gave her a dulux chart Grin, she agreed with him and went with his recommendations!

dangermouseisace · 08/09/2017 07:58

I lived in a rented house that had been painted in farrow and ball years ago (7?), and it was holding up really well. Washable too- maybe they used the 'modern emulsion?'

My mate is a painter and decorator. He really likes farrow and ball!

I've just done my bedroom in one of their dark paints. It is beautiful and I'm really pleased. I only have a little room though!

19lottie82 · 08/09/2017 08:32

They have a shade called "moles breath" Grin

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 08/09/2017 08:41

Our whole house is Farrow and Ball, and Little Greene. They are worth the money, as others have said, it's the colours and finishes are beautiful. My kitchen was painted 10 years ago in F&B Powder Room Blue and it's still going strong.

QuackingHell · 08/09/2017 08:43

Freaking love F&B. Have had experience with decorators saying it's dreadful but when I've painted with it myself I've always found it fab!
My MIL paints virtually everything cornforth white and it looks stunning. But still looks different in each room because of different light! I think your partially paying for quality (imo) and partially for the selection of colours which look expensive and classy. I sound so up my own arse Blush but let's be honest F&B is a bit of a status thing, so when someone says how nice your newly decorated room looks, you can say "oh thanks it's xxxx colour from F&B" and they'll know it cost you a bloody fortune 😂
We tried the Hemsley stuff (Homebase on brand that are trying to copy F&B) and it wasn't as good quality.. didn't get the same finish despite being almost identical colours.

rabbitcakes · 08/09/2017 08:45

I rate it highly. The modern emulsion has a slightly higher sheen but really works in kitchens and bathrooms.

EssentialHummus · 08/09/2017 08:47

Another one with moany decorators here. We went with Valspar in the end, finish is fab and it worked out at a third of the price.

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/09/2017 08:54

Only used it once and although the finish is nice when it decided to stick to the wall. I did 6 coats before I gave up and painted room dulux white.
Builder said to paint room in a made up paint of the same colour then do a top coat in F&B to get the finish.
It is like painting with milk and has about the same coverage

Doublechocolatetiffin · 08/09/2017 08:58

I love the farrow and ball colours, they just look so much better than the dulux alternatives. We spent ages picking similar colours to farrow and ball in the Sioux tlrnahe, got samples of them for £££ and not a single paint came up looking anything like the swatch.

We caved and went farrow and ball throughout and it's lovely. I am always skeptical of decorators saying it's awful. I suspect its at least partly because farrow and ball do not do trade prices so they can't make some money on the paint.

Crumbs1 · 08/09/2017 09:05

Our walls are wattle and daub in the older part of the house and the listing means we have to use heritage colours. F&B and Littlegreene allow this and suit the house. It gives a lovely matt, deep yet light colour to rooms that could be quite dark because of ceiling height. We use Crown period collection in more modern part.

BoysofMelody · 08/09/2017 09:06

Another vote for Johnstone trade.

Might have to give this Farron and Ball. A collaboration between Tim Farron and Bobby Ball is very exciting.

MarshaBrady · 08/09/2017 09:12

A painter will usually moan about using it, but it's very nice and has a great finish with good colours. So when asking for quotes say you will then they can decide if they want to quote.

BringMeTea · 08/09/2017 09:23

Farron and Ball sounds like a new political alliance
Or a new Northern comedy duo...

Anyway. I have used it and I love, love the colour and texture but by God it just falls off the wall if you so much as touch it. Dreadful. On that basis I wouldn't use it again.

Little Green would be my next choice and Mylands gets good reviews.

lightgreenglass · 08/09/2017 09:29

I have Farrow and Ball in half of my house but I have Fired Earth in the other half and Fired Earth is far superior - much easier with children in terms of being able to wipe down. Farrow and Ball tends to come off the wall whereas the FE paint stays on when wiped with a wet wipe.

Compared to Dulux and the like - the colours are richer and look much nicer.
