I have chronic indigestion, and the GP has suggested avoiding spicy and fatty foods for a few weeks to see if that makes a difference. I'm also on a tight budget at the moment, because I'm job-hunting. It's only me, so no need to cater for anyone else's tastes (but equally, it's more expensive buying e.g. meat and fish for one, IME).

Help me to avoid eating beans on toast for every meal - what can I make that is cheap, meets the dietary criteria and won't make me weep with boredom?

Bacon squash and sweet potato stew
(Use bacon medallions to avoid the fat, smoked are nicer imo but unsmoked work fine)
Fry (in olive oil spray for minimal fat) 10 bacon medallions, onion, 1clove garlic, 600g of mixed sweet potato and butternut squash chunks.
Add 1 tin tomatoes, and chicken stock (I think 200ml but not sure tbh), and your choice of herbs and cook for 8 minutes
Add 200g green beans
Cook for another 8 minutes

It's a slimming world recipe but no fake ingredients in sight! A firm favourite of mine

Pasta of your choice, with a sauce made from a leek chopped and softened by sweating in a non-stick pan, with a box of passata added. Grill a couple of rashers of lean smoked bacon until crispy, chop and stir in, together with pinches of herbs such as oregano, basil etc.
You could make double the amount of sauce and freeze half to save work Smile

This is making me really hungry now Grin

But thanks everyone, I am now inspired and excited rather than mildly depressed!

Try a supplement called iborgast of you can get any delivered into the UK. Totally harmless, safe enough to give to babies, and resolved my acid reflux and ibs when medication and diet failed.

I think it depends on the lentil. My GP told me to control my intake of dried lentils and beans, so not avoid but have them no more than 3 times a week. Fresh lentils and beans were fine but it's hard getting them in the UK.

Salmon is oily fish. I love the stuff but it makes me flare every bloody time.

Hi OP, I've had a lot of digestion issues in my life and after taking ranitidine for awhile I went to see a nutritionist. She said that alot of indigestion is actually LOW stomach acid and that antacids only exacerbate the problem. I was advised to eat fermented foods such as sauerkraut and natural yoghurt, avoid sugar and alcohol and eat loads of veg. It's meant to heal your gut and repopulate it with good bacteria. I wasn't terribly disciplined with the plan but I did see improvement. Check out Michael Mosley's clever guts diet for nice recipes!
