I'll start. When I was a teenager someone found half a dead cockroach and buried it in a plate of chips whilst I had gone to get a drink. I came back and started chatting to them and eating chips but not looking at my plate. I didn't eat the cockroach thankfully but actually had it in my hand and poised ready to eat it when I noticed the gleeful/horrified expression on their face, looked at what I had in my fingers and threw it on the floor whilst retching. I felt sick! (And threw my chips away because they had been contaminated) Angry

In year nine at school I was in the choir. In the run up to concerts we would be pulled out of some lessons to rehearse.

On one such occasion I missed the final lesson of the day, went back in the next day and my tutor group were all laughing at me. Turns out a "friend" had told them all I'd eaten too much chocolate and messed myself, that's why I wasn't in the last lesson of the day.

It upset me for years, especially because I was already the deeply uncool and shy one. Also because my tutor group knew I was in rehearsals, but they chose to believe and spread the lie anyway.

When my eldest DS was a baby, my best friend was coming over to babysit him.

Before she got here, I filled a nappy with chocolate Ready Brek.

As she walked in the room, I was pretending to change the nappy and said, "Ohhh I think he's got diarrhea".

I opened the nappy (which looked disgusting), licked the contents and said, "Yep, definitely diarrhea. Here, you taste it".

The look of horror on her face was priceless Grin Grin Grin

gamerchick - That poor boy. My heart just sank when I read that :(

gamerchick · 07/09/2017 21:03

I know, I probably should have left it off. Long time ago but still.

Youtubes got some guduns, how some of those pranksters don't get punched is beyond me Grin

CaoNiMartacus · 07/09/2017 21:07

When we were at university, my best friend set up a fake email account and pretended to be a literary agent who had read something I'd written and was scouting me.

I got as far as setting up a meeting on the Tottenham Court Road with this fake agent until my friend came clean.

I was devastated!

However, I ended up signing with an actual literary agent later that year, which slightly took the sting out of it.

When I was 15 I was being a fly bullied and was depressed ( thought didn't realise at the time) about my parents divorce. I had a Bf who was your unkind to me but my sort of friend also liked him. She set up a series of online personalities and began chatting to me - trying to make me like this boy online and leave my BF . She pretended all his favourite books were the ones she knew were mine etc ... I believed it for a good week until I noticed he couldn't spell for shot and couldn't talk about minor book details ...
it broke my heart - but not in the way she expected.

Escapepeas · 07/09/2017 21:59

When I was 18, a 'friend' told me that someone we both knew really liked me and wanted to ask me out but was too shy. As it happened, I quite liked him too, so I called him and suggested we go to the cinema. He was clearly nonplussed and said no thanks, I don't want to. So I suggested a drink instead and he just said 'look, I don't know why you are asking, I'm not interested, I don't know why you think I would be'. It was excruciating and I basically said cheerily 'OK! See you around!' and hung up.

'Friend' told me afterwards it was a prank, but because we all lived in a very small town where everyone knew each other, obviously it got around and I was a laughing stock. It seemed the general opinion of me was that I was poor working class whereas the guy was rich upper class and 'friend' thought it would be funny to see me kicked into touch by my betters.

chitofftheshovel · 07/09/2017 22:21

worra that's brilliant and probably didn't leave her scarred for life like some of these other stories.

My mum was at a party once and the hosts toddler approached her mum with chocolate cake on her fingers which she presented to her mum to lick off. It wasn't chocolate.

SeaWitchly · 07/09/2017 22:24

followTheyellowbrickRoad - that is truly awful, your poor little boy Sad

And gamerchick, my heart also sank when I read your post. Children can be so cruel and I do hope that a teacher or another adult stepped in and was able to support this poor lad and perhaps teach the others a thing or two about basic kindness and empathy.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 07/09/2017 22:26

When I was about 8 I was acting in the street with my brother and all the neighbourhood kids. They went inside one girls house to get drinks and my brother bought me a mug out. It was full I thought of water and it was a really hot day so I started to chug it down only to instantly realise it was actually boiling water. God knows how I didn't notice I guess I didn't really look and picked the mug up by the handle plus it obviously wasn't something I would expect. I had to spend the day in A&E.

PoorYorick · 07/09/2017 22:28

This is why I hate practical jokes, always have done. They are just based in cruelty and sadism. And you never know what might truly upset someone or why...but they'll always be under pressure to make out that they think it's hilarious even if it's really psychologically damaging.

There is precisely one prank I know of that sincerely made me laugh. An actor friend was in a comedy performance and his role involved giving a slow, sexy smile to the lead actor, having been closed-lipped up to that point. Before the first night, he slipped in some awful-looking comedy false teeth. Lead actor had to work hard not to crack up on stage.

Someone who I thought was a friend told me she was raped. I believed her but it wasn't true and I got made fun of as I was 'stupid enough to fall for it'.

OlderGolder · 07/09/2017 22:35

Escapeas, that is awful. When I was in a rented house, I snogged a flatmate's friend.... his colleague I think. I really liked him. My flatmate did that thing to the landline to make it ring. I picked up one of the extensions and he pretended to be his friend. I chatted nervously and awkwardly for a few minutes but i thought I had a date. When I went downstairs my flatmate was breaking his heart laughing........... Awful. This is why I never flirt. Never take a risk. Never smile and look down and look back and smile again. Nope.

5rivers7hills · 07/09/2017 22:36

Most of these are horrific

Pranks aren't hardy ever funny. They are about upsetting someone.

5rivers7hills · 07/09/2017 22:36

Are hardly ever funny

PoorYorick · 07/09/2017 22:45

Pranks aren't hardy ever funny. They are about upsetting someone.

I agree. That's what I liked about the false teeth one...it actually hinged on making the victim laugh.

Soci · 07/09/2017 22:50

I think mean pranks are just another form of bullying.

ElChan03 · 07/09/2017 22:55

My ex regularly used to prank me.

Salt in my tea, dead spiders in my hair, used to hide in the loft and made noises so when I thought I was alone and there were creepy noises and freaking out he would jump out and scare the crap out of me. Worst thing is a lot of the time he filmed me secretly and put it on YouTube.

Glad he's an ex

steff13 · 07/09/2017 22:58

This wasn't on ME per se, but it was pretty upsetting for me and others.

I work for my state government. When I'd been there about a year, they decided they needed to do layoffs, and they were very hush hush about which departments would be affected. I had the least seniority in my department, and our union has a last in/first out policy.

They decided to eliminate all of the administrative support staff, including our administrative support worker. They got the calls first. Then, one of my co-workers, same job title as me but a little more seniority (second lowest after me), picked up her phone, talked on it, and then hung up and said, "guys, I got the call, I'm being laid off." Of course I was upset because I knew if she was being laid off I was too. I'm the primary breadwinner in my family, so losing my job would be a real blow. My coworkers were hugging us and telling us how sorry they were - the she burst out laughing; she'd made it up!

It was very insensitive to me, but it was especially insensitive to our administrative support worker, who was being laid off, who HAD gotten that call, and sat right next to this woman! That was about 9 years ago, and I still shake my head at that behavior. Just awful.

steff13 · 07/09/2017 22:59

I think mean pranks are just another form of bullying.

Agreed. I think they're mean-spirited by nature.

purplecorkheart · 07/09/2017 23:03

I honestly wonder about the mind set of people who play pranks on other people. I think they are at best pathetic and at worse cruel. Sad that they get their kicks by making fun of someone else.

bouyou · 07/09/2017 23:08

Not sure if this counts. I made my x a cup of tea. He stirred it and I was obviously still holding it as I remember him then putting the spoon on my hand which was hot so made me jump and spill tea on my hand. Prick. Makes me cross just thinking about it.

QuimReaper · 07/09/2017 23:21

Santa have you posted that before? I remember being really upset by that story before, I hope it hasn't happened twice Sad

gamer that is horrible. It's the kind of thing that would have happened to a girl at my school.

QuimReaper · 07/09/2017 23:23

It wasn't mean exactly but I was seriously unimpressed when I went to a cash machine with a friend and she lunged over my shoulder and withdrew £200. It was so immature, all it did was piss me off and inconvenience me and I just couldn't see the humour. If I'd lost it or something I'd have seriously expected her to refund me.
