To wonder why accept and except are such a problem.

I know it's not a big deal and it shouldn't affect/effect (another one) me but it does. I don't think there's a day goes by when I'm not irritated by it. So many people are using the word "except" in place of "accept". Anyone else get irritated angered by it?

Using 'his' instead of 'he's'. They don't even sound the same! E.g His going to school tomorrow.

To the pp mentioning current/currant, might I suggest that ants like currAnts? Grin

Lol, I hate your/you're being mixed up, their/there and would of, which should be would have. Just read the context!!!

One thing that really bugs me is 'They're coming to visit my DH and I.' You wouldn't say, 'They're coming to visit I' but 'They're coming to visit me.' Therefore it's 'They're coming to visit my DH and me.' Even people who are well educated get that wrong, I can't work out why.

"They're coming to visit my DH and I"

"...'m fucking off for the day to eat cake in silence" perhaps? Grin

I think that the I /me confusion is similar to the overuse of reflexive pronouns (myself, ourselves, yourself etc) where the user thinks it sounds a bit fancy so over-extends the 'rule'.

BlueUggs · 07/09/2017 14:23

Different to....no, it's similar to and different from...

For those of you getting your knickers in a twist about less and fewer - relax! It is largely made up nonsense (a bit like the rule that infinitives should not be split); the main purpose of this rule is that it allows people to unjustifiably hitch up their judgey pants.

I hate it when people say "try and do..." instead of "try to do..."

NiteFlights · 07/09/2017 15:45

Worse and worst seem to cause problems for some people. I don't understand why.

Discreet and discrete irritates me but is more understandable.

Advice/Advise

I've seen it wrong so many times I actually began to question whether it was me that had it wrong!

JassyRadlett · 07/09/2017 16:01

It is largely made up

That is true of literally all language, ever. Grin

Nob and knob: people get them wrong on here all the time.

A nob is a (well dressed and dim?) rich person, and a knob is a dick. There may be a significant overlap, but the words are not synonymous.

I am pissed off that even the OED, quoted on the first page of this thread, doesn't acknowledge that "affect" is a noun. These words are delightfully confusing because each one of them is both a noun and a verb: 4 discrete meanings in all.
