AIBU, DS forced to stand on the bus?

First day back to school today and lo and behold, we have a new bus service.
To cut a long and boring story short, instead of two buses going on different routes from A to B, now there's one bus with a smaller minibus scooping up the odd few DC's from the outlying farms etc. This would make sense if the bus had capacity for all the children who need to use it. Today DS said there was only a handful of seats left (we're now almost the last stop) and the middle years at school don't return till tomorrow.
AIBU to think that all the children should have a seat?
Having grown up in London I'm no stranger to having to stand on buses, trains and tubes but this bus travels along windy country lanes (sections of which are national speed limit) before having to cross the main A road through the town. As a one off I guess it's unavoidable, on a daily basis I'm not sure if I'm being precious?

In which case, then, standing is not permitted. The coach operator is risking his operators licence, and should not be doing this.

Speak to the operator first, and then the council. School unlikely to have had much or any involvement.

Crispbutty · 06/09/2017 18:42

Standing is not allowed on coaches.

TheFlandersPigeonMurderer · 06/09/2017 18:42

I don't think they can savoy, they already use those huge executive coaches Hmm

If he's not nap then someone will which is almost as bad Wink

And he didn't have to stand today as the whole school hadn't returned. Yet your post title implies he was FORCED to stand Confused

Seriously, you need to wait until things actually happen before you start to worry about them. You don't even know the arrangements for the buses tomorrow. Nobody has been forced to stand.

What an absolute waste of people's time Hmm

SavoyCabbage · 06/09/2017 18:44

I don't think you are being precious at all. They should all get a seat.

pambeesley · 06/09/2017 18:45

How's old is he?

Under 11 I agree but by comp no one stays in their seats anyway!

Ameliablue · 06/09/2017 18:52

Our school has a similar contract with a coach company and they have lots of different sizes of buses so chances are the mini bus will be replaced by a larger coach but perhaps not another full size one. I'd wait until tomorrow and see what arrives. If indeed there are not enough seats then put in a complaint ( and keep him off the bus).

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 06/09/2017 18:55

A coach on "windy lanes" is not going to be getting anywhere near the national speed limit. It won't be any different to the speed of a normal bus.

DingDongDenny · 06/09/2017 18:57

If it was someone coming on to say - 'we live in a rural area, would it be ok for me to load the car up with 6 kids, I know they won't have seat belts but I'm sure they will be fine ' there would be a massive YABU - but this is actually more dangerous.

happypoobum · 06/09/2017 18:58

If it's a coach then it should have seat belts and nobody should be allowed to stand.

Hopefully this was a one off due to low numbers and there will be a full service tomorrow? If not, I would definitely complain.

TheHungryDonkey · 06/09/2017 18:58

YANBU or precious. This sounds dangerous. Shouldn't they all be seated and with seat dogs?

happypoobum · 06/09/2017 18:59

Actually - it's possible that if it is one coach tomorrow and it gets full, the driver will not allow DS or other children to board once the coach is full.........

Stoneagemum · 06/09/2017 18:59

Does your area still have the '3 to a seat' rule, where they calculate that 3 school children can sit on a double seat when they calculate how many children can be transported by that bus?
Of course the children don't actually share like that so you end up with standing, sitting on the floor etc.

topcat2014 · 06/09/2017 19:03

@stoneage - I think that rule was removed when the seat belts in coaches law came in.

topcat2014 · 06/09/2017 19:04

The council should have known how many on the school roll qualified for the transport, and tendered the size accordingly.

Maybe give it a week or so to see how it settles down.

TheFlandersPigeonMurderer · 06/09/2017 19:05

Are you quite well migraleve, you seem disproportionately aggravated
And I'm loving dailymail's utter belief that our country lanes are populated by serenely pottering large vehicles who never breach thirty miles and hour Grin
That'll be an interesting scenario happy. The council issues passes so should be fully aware of numbers, and surely "three to a seat" can't apply if you're using a coach?

He hasn't been forced to stand yet. I would wait to get in full-on outrage if and when it happens.

Migraleve · 06/09/2017 19:09

Are you quite well migraleve, you seem disproportionately aggravated

Erm, I'm not the one telling people my son was forced to stand on a bus when actually he had a seat Hmm

Solasum · 06/09/2017 19:10

Could they be assuming a certain percentage will always be absent?

WorraLiberty · 06/09/2017 19:10

How old is he OP?

showergel1 · 06/09/2017 19:11

I used to stand in the footwell next to the door on the bus to college. Or in the middle of an aisle with nothing to hold onto (people either side). Last stop on an absolutely packed bus.
Absolutely shocking.
He definitely should not be standing on a coach.

thereallochnessmonster · 06/09/2017 19:11

How old is he, OP?

Stoneagemum · 06/09/2017 19:12

In sockeatingmonsters link only those 14 and over are required to wear a belt so, I wasn't sure if some sort of loop hole still existed

MapMyMum · 06/09/2017 19:15

Would you all be as blasé about him being in a car with no seatbelt on? And buses on country lanes really can pick up speed, they do not pootle along at 20mph as city buses do
