To be depressed by this weather

Yippeedoodaa · 05/09/2017 14:46

So it's the 5th September, we've had maybe 20 days of proper sunshine since April (live in the northwest) and then maybe another 20-30 dry days which are overcast and a bit meh and the rest of the time it's rained or been cold enough to consider putting the heating on during SUMMER.

I absolutely can't stand this weather anymore. We lived in London for ten years and yes it was better but to be honest both my maternity leaves were very rainy there too!

Does it get anyone else down? I am sure my childhood (in the northwest) was sunnier..I am seriously considering uprooting elsewhere but don't know where to go!! It's pissing it down again now and got to do the school run.

I put the heating on yesterday morning as it was freezing in the babies room. I remember a few years back doing the school run in a dress and flip flops start of September now it's a rain coat. East anglia.

Northern Ireland here and YANBU weather has been absolutely shit this summer - warm & wet. I have sworn there'll be no summer clothes next year waste of money Angry

Zafodbeeblbrox10 · 05/09/2017 23:16

The shit weather might be something to do with the Chemtrails that seem to be blighting our skies regularly these days.

teaandtoast · 06/09/2017 12:05

Interesting. I think we've had a great summer! Must be regional differences.

BanjoStarz · 06/09/2017 12:52

I don't get the point of getting upset or depressed or even bothered by the weather - you can't change it!

You either move somewhere with a different climate or learn to ignore it.

This conversation has been had a lot in my office recently, people can't believe how dark it's getting so early, and isn't it awful we haven't had a summer... I don't see what the moaning achieves tbh.

GinGeum · 06/09/2017 15:56

I understand what you're saying Banjo, but when you work hard all year for it to rain on all your crops for the whole of August, you kind of need to be able to say 'well this is shit isn't it'. Granted, that's not quite the same as standing at the bus stop and narrating the weather every day!

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/09/2017 16:02

It depends on what you call 'warm'. My OH is sweating at 12 deg C, can't cope if it goes above 18 deg c. I don't even take my jumper off under 20 deg C and am perfectly happy up to 30 deg C. So, say 21 degrees is just nice and warm for me (not quite sitting out in it hot, but pleasant for going about) while he's lying in a darkened room fanning himself and moaning about how hot it is and when is going to cool down.

It's in the eye of the beholder.

ikeadyounot · 06/09/2017 16:04

You are not alone.

I'm afraid that with climate change, this is likely to be the pattern for much of the country now: wetter, darker summers. As someone who is a light junkie, I find it really depressing. As PPs have said, I too remember glorious summers of sunshine as a child, and feel sad that we've wrecked our climate for future generations.

BanjoStarz · 06/09/2017 16:33

Ah Gin, good point about crops - our haymakers have had a bloody awful time of it this year, it's either been too wet to cut or too wet to bale Sad

My issue is mainly those people moaning who literally only see the outside when they're walking from the car to their office and home Hmm

Delatron · 06/09/2017 17:21

I don't think anywhere in the UK was nice from mid July until the end of August?
In SE we had a heatwave in June but not the whole of June. I remember it turning rubbish 11th July onwards.
Where in the UK has had a brilliant summer? Unless you like cool temps and rain of course!

megletthesecond · 06/09/2017 17:23

Yanbu.

We've only had a week or two of warm weather. The rest of the Summer was overcast.

teaandtoast · 06/09/2017 18:02

The summer in the Midlands was brilliant this year. I've never dried so much washing outside.
Today was sunny too.

Delatron · 06/09/2017 18:35

Was it? Did you have a warm and sunny July and August? I mean sitting outside weather, temperatures of above 23?

You can dry washing outside in pretty chilly weather as long as it's dry and windy.

Sciurus83 · 06/09/2017 20:10

Yanbu it's been miserable. I think there's definitely something to be said for different people's reactions, I am always cold, gas fire going on in the evening and there's been maybe one or two days I would consider warm enough for shorts. But I am happiest at 30+, I wish DH's job didn't mean we can't emigrate somewhere warm!

tehmina23 · 06/09/2017 20:14

I really enjoyed my Canaries holiday in July when temperatures reached 40c!! It was lovely to be able to just wear a bikini or a dress & flip flops.

Since my return the weather has been mostly shit... I want to emigrate!!

Sciurus83 · 06/09/2017 20:27

I'm with you techmina23, perfectly happy at 40! Let's emigrate!

KERALA1 · 06/09/2017 20:34

I hear you op. I love the heat. I think there have been maybe 8 days tops when it's been properly warm so we can sit out in the evening when it gets dark. We in south west. Boldly sat outside in cafe today pals and I ignored the fact we were bloody freezing in our summer cloths we don't want to admit it's over.

Two and a half weeks in southern Spain got me through. I genuinely wish I had been born in Southern Europe feel that's "my" climate. Wouldn't want to leave family and friends but get why all those retirees bugger off.

cluelessnewmum · 06/09/2017 20:44

I agree the weather has changed, summers aren't what they used to, but we just have to accept it. It's a shame though, I don't mind dark, cold winters if there's a pay off of a decent summer.

That said, living in the NW you will get the worst weather, colder and much more rain. It is comparatively better down here (I have friends who moved from Manchester partly because of the weather).

Chaotica · 06/09/2017 20:50

teaandtoast I was just about to say the same thing. It has been warm and mainly dry until the last week. Courgettes growing, tomatoes ripening happily outside, loads of figs on the tree -- could have been in the mediterranean but I'm in the Midlands. (Sorry to the rest of you - there must be some strange micro-climate thing going on.)

Delatron · 06/09/2017 23:37

Gah, so really there has been some microclimate heatwave in the Midlands that the rest of us haven't been aware of?

Whiterabbitears · 06/09/2017 23:42

I'm quite enjoying the cool weather and rain, I hate summer and heat, I think this summer was too hot.

(Runs away)

PointlessUsername · 06/09/2017 23:44

I Love Auturm/Winter so i will be glad when it gets a bit colder actually.

numbmum83 · 06/09/2017 23:51

I'm in the Midlands and I must have missed this good weather ! Seemed lovely til about 9am most mornings then drizzle or overcast rest of the day . I can only remember the bank holiday weekend being nice for the whole of the kids summer holidays . . Poor kids :( they were in blazers and stuffy classrooms when we we're getting our summer .

Lovesabadboy · 07/09/2017 00:18

Delatron ...you are spot on. The weather changed on 11th July.
It had been lovely until then so we planned to go out for a nice meal in a pub garden for my husband's birthday on 11th July...it was absolutely pishing down all that day...and it has rained at some point for most days ever since.
As a pp said, the days start well and then cloud over by 9/10am.
And...to add insult to injury, we have missed all the storms here (Oxfordshire) all summer too...literally has one measly rumble!
I don't even like it really hot, but what I do like is dry, sunny and warm to be able to sit out in the evenings with a glass of wine. I have not done that once this year!
