To ask if any of you have had teeth whitened?

I've been wondering about professional teeth whitening, my teeth are not horribly yellow but I'd like them to be a bit whiter, although maybe not Hollywood glow in the dark style.
Have any of you had it done? Were you please with the results? What was the process like?

I don't want to phone up places that do it until I have a bit more of an idea as I don't want them to just sell me the dream!!

I should add mine were done at my dentists. I had a check up and hygienist appointment first and my dentist approved it

I drink coffee every day and though my teeth have never been quite as white as that first time I did them, they are an acceptable shade (for me) these days.

I used boutique whitening, got great results.

A bit of sensitivity near the end of using the 16% but my hygeinist said to do a night of sensodyne in the trays if that happened.

4 years ago paid my dentist 140€ to get moulds made of my teeth and 40€ for each tube of whitening gel, bought 10 tubes, teeth became quite sensitive and hurt but teeth came up a few shades whiter so was delighted. In July I bought Crest White Strips Professional from the U.S., they cost 60$ for 2 weeks supply and did a better job, quicker and less painfully.

I had mounds made at the dentist and bought the gel. I had to stop using them as I got the most awful shooting pains in my teeth. Checked with the dentist who said it is affects people differently as it effectively dehydrates the tooth. Couldn't use it in the end it was so painful.

domesticgoddesshaha · 05/09/2017 16:24

These crest whitening things sound ok, maybe I'll give that a go first.

Danniotley

They will be the 'zingers' I mentioned in my other reply to the OP. They can be unbearable but I got through it but different people have different levels of tolerance. I read a review where a woman said she had such strong zingers that they caused her to fall out of bed and roll around on the floor while howling in agony. I thought that was a tad extreme but perhaps they really did hurt her that much.

I once read somewhere that if you leave whitening toothpaste on for about five minutes it can make your teeth whiter. I do it about once a week, as it's one of those tips that aren't really a hassle to do. I do think it helps a bit. There's also the eucryl powder that's supposed to destain them. Haha, I do that too!

I don't have sensitive teeth. I got the proper dentist sends away to make a mould of your teeth stuff. The pain was horrific. I couldn't sleep ( you are supposed to wear them with the gel in overnight. It was like getting electric shocks in your face. I took the maximum of over the counter painkillers and it didn't touch the pain which continued into the next few days and made me drool. I can almost feel the pain again just typing this. It was horrific.

Not yet (thinking about it) but have had the airflow treatment which essentially uses bicarbonate of soda to sandblast your teeth. Definitely looked cleaner and a bit whiter afterwards. Didn't hurt either, although My face was covered in white dust afterwards.

Same as Bacony. Highly recommend it. For anyone with sensitive teeth just please get it done professionally ie by your dentist who will be able to advise you and give specific guidance about the procedure.
I had my moulds done by my dentist in 2007, used the peroxide gel on alternate nights/days for about 3 weeks. It lasted for almost 8 years which I was very surprised about because I do drink tea and the odd glass of red wine.
I didn't need to do a top up until two years ago, which involved buying more gel from the dentist (£40) as I still had the moulds which my dentist checked were still a good a fit.
I have sensitive teeth but because I took my dentist's advice I had no more than minimal increased sensitivity whilst I was using the peroxide. No lasting effects except nicer, whiter teeth. Grin

BiteyShark · 06/09/2017 08:31

I had moulds done at the dentist but when I used the gel they gave me it hurt so much I decided that my teeth were not that bad after all Grin. The pain was an intermittent sharp shooting pain which made me yelp and I usually can put up with a lot of pain before making a fuss.

AccrualIntentions · 06/09/2017 08:34

My husband has done with the moulds and gel from the dentist. It's worked well on him, although he does have to keep it topped up periodically. It was quite gradual too, so he could stop before it got too Rylan.

Considering doing it myself once I'm not pregnant anymore.

Lucisky · 06/09/2017 08:34

I had it done courtesy of my dentist, using moulds and gel. Yes, the results were amazing but it wasn't worth the pain. It was like every nerve in the treated teeth was on fire. The effect was cumulative, so the first time it was just a bit of pain, but with repeated treatments the sensitivity grew. Because my natural tooth colour is on the yellow side, I should have repeated the treatments regularly to keep the whiteness, but I just couldn't face it. My dentist said that it is very common to have to keep doing it - silly me, I thought they would just stay white. It cost about £300 (quite a few years ago now).

Nothing sold over the counter in the uk works, because sufficient bleach to work should only be done by a dentist. Beauty product packaging lies.

American stuff does work as they have lower safety standards and think the Hollywood piano look is attractive. Your choice if you want to risk your teeth.

gobster · 06/09/2017 10:18

As you only get one set of teeth I'd only do whiten via a dentist

There's a lot of talk about whether all the other methods are safe and damaging your enamel. Although maybe more expensive I'd rather ensure it's not going to cause long term problems

tehmina23 · 06/09/2017 10:55

I got moulded trays from my dentist & used the gel, my teeth were much whiter.

But also more sensitive so I use pronamel sensodyne toothpaste & I don't have a problem now.
