Check your tax credit awards if you have a 16 year old

My 16 year old is staying on in school, at the beginning of august I filled in the online declaration on the gov.uk website, there was a box to tick asking if you'd informed tax credits whichh i ticked no and it said 'we will inform tax credits for you'

Got my tax credits award through a couple of weeks ago which admittedly i only glanced at, saw my income was correct but didn't really look further as nothing else had changed, thinking I'd read it properly later.

Just done my filing today and read it properly and it says my tax credits for my eldest has stopped. I called tax credits and they had no record of him staying in education, i told them I'd filled in the online declaration and was told i needed to inform them separately.

My money is now going to be down this month and they've said once it's amended it may not all go in one lump sum but may be spread across my payments for the rest of the year which obviously is not helpful! Obviously i should have checked the award properly when it came through though so that is my fault.

Anyway, this is a heads up that if you have a child continuing in education and filled out the declaration online thinking it was all sorted, to check your award as tax credits may not have been amended.

I'm going through this too. I told them my son was staying on but still they will pay me less until it's been amended. They are rubbish!

Also do child benefit if you get that

I've called them both up now, it's all amended but goodness knows what's going to happen with the payments. I've just didn't £200 on uniform and bits too as our school has completely changed their uniform. Could really do without this!!

I've had this every year for five years in a row.

So has my best friend.

There must be a better, more efficient way. One woman on a helpline told me last year, very huffily, 'Well we need to see who's doing apprenticeships first'. We'd already confirmed to CB and HMRC that my son was going into 2nd year of A levels and he was registered with the sixth form college.

It's so frustrating! I'm not going to be able to pay the council tax tomorrow as I'd expected to be able to do so in going to have to plead with them first thing.

You will get the money backdated, but not till some point later in the month.

I rather imagine the Council will be familiar with the problem. Are you in council tax arrears? If not, the Council will be ok as it's an annual bill.

Just going through this too ... only found out today when I received no payment! I told them two weeks ago that she was staying on at school when ringing them about something else but they hadn't made a note on the system. Now i have to wait God knows how long for them to update my claim ... Confused

Thank you for the heads up,dd is staying on and I also ticked the "we will inform tax credits for you"box,so will be double....nay.... treble checking.

Fieryfighter · 05/09/2017 08:57

Luckily mine have been sorted quite quickly. Called them Monday, today my online account shows a half payment will go in Friday followed by a full payment on Monday .. not sure what happened to the other half payment??? I guess it's spread out over the year now ... or something... it'll hurt me this week but half a payment is better than nothing.

Hopefully child benefit will be sorted as quickly!
