People actually believe the earth is flat.
Anti vaxers.
Creationists.
Young earthers.
Even Brexit, so many people just wrong about stuff and don't believe the facts when they are put in front of them (90% of Boston are now Polish).

Why are these nonsense views increasing?

Anyway, aibu to think people are fucking stupid?

I don't mind people holding anti-science views, but they shouldn't be allowed to use the internet.

If you accept the benefits of science in your life then you have to accept the science too.

DaddyBeer · 04/09/2017 17:20

No, a lot of people really are fucking stupid.

The average IQ is about 100. That's a big chunk of humanity. Plenty of scope to get things just wrong enough to really fuck things up.

I was chatting to some parents a while back, nice people I like, and they mentioned they hadn't had their son vaccinated yet. He's nine months old. I didn't know what to say - I didn't assume, but I didn't want to ask either and find out, then be forced to think they were stupid.

Sick to death of this anti science conspiracy nonsense.
GorgeousLadyOfWrangling · 04/09/2017 17:21

Earth being flat is stupid, yes.
Creationists/young earthers = religion. Each to their own.
Brexit = in some (not all) cases, people being misled. (I was a remainer)
Anti vaxers = heartbreaking for those who truly believe their child regressed/reacted badly to immunization

1/4 yanbu
are those judgy knickers giving you a wedgie yet?!

Pollydonia · 04/09/2017 17:23

YADNBU. It actually beggars belief that people can believe this crap.

People can have their own views (no matter how stupid) but when they try and push them onto others that's wrong IMO. Leave us (sensible) people alone.

DaddyBeer · 04/09/2017 17:25

How do you work that out?

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 04/09/2017 17:25

YANBU.

I don't mind if people don't know things or don't understand. But I find it frustrating when people don't want to understand, or think it doesn't matter whether something is correct or not Confused

Fresh8008 · 04/09/2017 17:27

I only found out yesterday that an "alien satellite", has been orbiting Earth for nearly 13,000 years and has been TWICE caught by NASA on camera passing the International Space Station (ISS) and the Moon.

QuentinSummers · 04/09/2017 17:28

YANBU. don't forget though, people are sick of experts Grin

Fresh8008 · 04/09/2017 17:28

The average IQ is about exactly 100. And that means the average person is pretty fecking dim.

fakenamefornow · 04/09/2017 17:29

Why? Why do these views seem to be increasing?

OP posts:
WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 04/09/2017 17:31

It seems to be some sort of rebellion, like an extension of how school it was "cool" to be rubbish at maths. Also people seem to think that all "opinions" are equally valid, whether it's well established science or just some randomer who has decided something. I imagine the internet contributes as it's easier to spread misinformation.

DaddyBeer · 04/09/2017 17:31

I find it frustrating when people don't think clearly, or jump the conclusions.

Fake moon landings (yeah right)

A guy that got chatting to us all n holiday. Conspiracy theories. Illuminati. 9/11 was actually Mossad. Chemtrails etc. Funnily enough, he was a taxi driver. Voted UKIP too..

OrgyofSausages · 04/09/2017 17:32

I'd do it just to wind you up OP. It wouldn't be very difficult. You are a miserable old
lemon sucker aren't you?
Grin

couchparsnip · 04/09/2017 17:32

Creatonists/young earthers are anti-science meaning they are prepared to ignore scientific findings in favour of religious teaching. Most Christians are cleverer than this.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 04/09/2017 17:32

I am in a historic -photo group on fb. Today they showed a 9/11 picture. You should see the mentalists/anti-semites on there. It beggars belief. I fear they have not a gcse or a minimum wage job between them.

couchparsnip · 04/09/2017 17:33

I don't think the idiots are increasing in number. Its just that the internet is making them more visible.

Mrskeats · 04/09/2017 17:35

It's not about views though is it? Some things are just fact.

histinyhandsarefrozen · 04/09/2017 17:35

It's visibility but also the visibility emboldens them.

It's also hard to challenge nutters.

TheRealBiscuitAddict · 04/09/2017 17:42

It's never black and white though.

Creationism and people who believe the earth is flat.... well, it's just a personal thing isn't it and doesn't affect anyone so while it's a bit batshit it's not affecting you so let it go...

People who don't vaccinate...? Well, we have a vaccine damage fund in the UK which has paid out in the event of children who have been left seriously disabled by vaccinations. It happens. It's rare but it happens. So while a mainstream statement of "vaccination causes autism" doesn't hold up, the fact is that for a very tiny minority of children something does go wrong and vaccination turns out to be a huge issue. And if you know or know of someone that has happened to it's never as simple as just turning your back and saying "ah but that was someone else's child, mine will be ok."

We absolutely can argue that vaccination is the best thing for the vast majority of children in the UK, but we also need to acknowledge that vaccine damage is a real thing, because it is.

The internet is letting idiots and the hard of thinking talk to each other and get validation for their crackpot ideas. A century ago they'd have been down the pub arguing that the earth was flat or that the queen was a lizard, their mates would laugh and they'd keep their ideas to themselves. Now they all flock to David Icke's forum and similar places where there are others just as crazy as they are.
