Rejected after job interview and now considering applying for similar role in same company - AIBU?

I recently applied for a job and was invited to interview, but was told after the interview that I wasn't successful.

The panel offered me feedback, mentioning that while they were impressed with my interview performance in general, they felt that I hadn't answered the competency-based questions for the role with enough clarity or conciseness.

I've just found out that the company are now advertising for the same role as well as a similar role within a different team (so two roles in total).

Would I be unreasonable to apply for the role in the other team, even though it's very similar to the one I previously applied for? WWYD?

Thanks :)

I would, work on the bits they said about and give it a go. Worst thing that could happen is another no, but you may get it!

AlternativeTentacle · 04/09/2017 13:39

I have done, and I got it.

LucieLucie · 04/09/2017 13:45

Definitely apply again!

This time at the end of the interview, if they ask if you have any questions, take the opportunity to ask if they feel you have answered everything fully and concisely.

Ask if there's anything they would like you to elaborate on.

Use the STAR technique when answering competency based questions and make sure you have a few good examples of things you've dealt with in the past that covers each part of the competency framework.

I would apply. I applied internally for a promotion at work, didn't get the first one I applied for but did get the second. They were formal interviews with panel scoring and practise helped.

PollyFlint · 04/09/2017 13:49

Definitely apply again - you've had feedback that you can work on and you'll be up against a different set of other candidates this time. Good luck!

e1y1 · 04/09/2017 14:19

DEFINITELY!

I have done this at the job I am currently at. I interviewed for one role and wasn't successful.

Applied for another role and got it immediately. I later learnt th apparently I was automatically next in line for the first role I interviewed for (if another job became available for that role).

So definitely go for it, you have nothing to lose.

Definitely apply again! I got turned down for a job I went for a few years ago. I reapplied when the position came up again, got it and then went on to become manager there!

Trills · 04/09/2017 14:25

Absolutely.

They didn't think you were awful, they just thought someone else was better.

For this role, you might be the best candidate.

hibertMcSchlibert · 04/09/2017 14:26

What do you have to lose?

mslevine86 · 04/09/2017 15:07

Definitely, it's exactly what I did. I got good feedback but said I needed a bit more management experience. I went away, did an ILM course and a year later the person who got the job was going on maternity leave. I'm still there but in a different permanent job :)

Tailypo · 04/09/2017 15:55

Thanks so much everyone! :)

I think what I was worried about was whether the fact that I'm reapplying to the same company so soon after being rejected for the previous role might count against me.

As someone who works in HR, I'd say go for it.

How long ago was it?As some companies have a minimum time to reapply.

cheminotte · 04/09/2017 16:10

Yes go for it. I have a colleague who got her job on her third interview with our company.

Tailypo · 04/09/2017 17:22

Sandy I had the interview a couple of weeks ago :) just wondering if this may be too soon?

I do lots of recruiting. It's fine to reapply so soon. Not if you were applying for 12 identical jobs in a few months but 2 is fine

SparklyLeprechaun · 04/09/2017 20:32

We've got a 3 months wait period at my work for rejected candidates, although sometimes we do invite people who didn't get a job if we felt they were good enough.
Check with the company and give it a go, why not?
