Sold out of date chicken

We use Tesco home delivery. Just had a delivery that included a number of packs of chicken-based snacks. Half of them turned out to be already four days past their "use by" date, very glad I noticed!

We've been using the service for a while and had a few cases of damaged items, or items that were about to go off when the website promised they'd be good for a week, that sort of thing, and Tesco have always refunded for them, which I've been fine with. Chicken that went off four days ago is a bit more serious, though. WIBU to ask for more compensation than a straight refund, since they'd be in a bunch of trouble if Trading Standards were to find out?

Obviously there's a gaping chasm between how serious that was vs how serious this was

Er, yes.

The only way you will find out how much Tesco care is by contacting them I guess.

stonecircle · 03/09/2017 13:46

OMG - how can you compare that case to yours?!!!

ThePants999 · 03/09/2017 14:06

Changing who we shop with is something we'd consider were it not for (a) still being paid up with Tesco's delivery saver programme for most of a year, and (b) the fact that I'm pretty sure all the supermarkets are equally bad at this.

Returning it to the customer service desk would certainly be an option, but defeats a fair chunk of the point of home delivery :-)

Give them a call, explain the situation and see what they say.

Facepalm indeed-I have no idea what that linked story has to do with anything. Confused

viques · 03/09/2017 14:10

sorry the pants, it was meant as a joke. Chicken based snacks/nugget .........never mind, I will slink away quietly.

JojoLapin · 03/09/2017 14:13

Get a refund but not good enough. It happened to me twice with Tesco home delivery. Chicken OOD or worst still, within date but the chicken stunk so badly it was definitely not safe to consume despite the date on the pack.

No longer use Tesco at the back of this. Gross.

TipTopTipTopClop · 03/09/2017 14:16

You clearly have no sense of proportion.

ThePants999 · 03/09/2017 14:18

@Sparklingbrook - I don't see what's so hard to understand. Both stories involve an employee taking insufficient care over a part of their job and potentially causing harm to a member of the public as a result. Yes, one was a major risk with major consequences, and the other is a minor risk with minor consequences, but that doesn't mean you can't draw any parallels.

Get a grip and contact Tesco.

I can see your sad face in the Daily Mail now "Our Family almost died thanks to Tesco!"

🙄

Bombardier25966 · 03/09/2017 14:23

What is a chicken based snack, how much chicken is actually in it?

Nobody died. Nobody was even slightly harmed. Get a refund and move on.

Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2017 14:25

It's not comparable at all ThePants999 of course I don't understand. A shop employee checking dates in a supermarket is just not the same at all.

I do think you are making a bit of a drama out of all this TBH. Just ring Tesco and get it sorted.

Then maybe ditch home delivery altogether and start going shopping yourself and choose the very long dates.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 03/09/2017 14:27

Wow. Comparing a past used by date to the death of a woman caused by window frames falling on her is crass and distasteful.

Get a grip indeed... and a sense of proportion and possibly some respect for the woman who died because of negligence Hmm

Xeneth88 · 03/09/2017 14:28

How pathetic. Hmm

stonecircle · 03/09/2017 14:34

It's not really appropriate to engage over that crass comparison, but do you not think you have some responsibility to check food before you feed it to your child? Hopefully yes.

Now, when the poor woman in your link walked past the building site, did she have any responsibility to check the safety of what she was walking past? No

candycoatedwaterdrops · 03/09/2017 15:30

Nothing happened to you, how can you even call it "minor consequences"?! Grin

TeenagersandFurbabies · 03/09/2017 15:39

All you need to do is call Tesco, the number is on the top of the delivery form. They will refund the out of date stuff and email you a voucher for money off your next shop. The store will be told about the issues with your delivery and it probably won't happen again. No one got hurt or was ill so no need to create a drama.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 03/09/2017 15:42

What the fuck am I reading here?

You got delivered a product that was out of date. That is shit and I agree that you should contact them and get a refund and most likely a voucher as an apology.

However to compare it in any way shape or form to the story that you linked to is distasteful in the extreme.

Fwiw my DM has had out of date stuff delivered from Fortnum and Mason. It's not just Tesco.

That said I've never had anything out of date from Ocado.

BlackJesus · 03/09/2017 15:44

What's a chicken based snack?

lljkk · 03/09/2017 15:47

compensation for what? Being stressed because you can imagine bad things might have happened but never did happen? That's not how compensation works. Compensation isn't based on catastrophes you made up in your head & then felt emotionally real.

Even though some MN threads go like that (pearl clutching nonsense)

oldbirdy · 03/09/2017 15:50

Morrison's home delivery us brilliant. It comes with a print out placed in order of use by dates: so "eat these by Monday, these by Tuesday" etc.
Weirdly I also bought an out of date chicken sandwich at M and S last week, and the strawberries were out of date the day I bought them, but not reduced. They were mushy the next morning. Will be avoiding in future.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 03/09/2017 15:50

Fwiw I mentioned to Ocado via twitter that the only free gift they have sent me this year was some meat (I have shopped with them for nearly 10 years and never bought meat as I'm vegi), they sent me a tenner. I wanted nothing more than a sorry.
Just bloody talk to Tesco rather than here.

WhiskyChick · 03/09/2017 15:54

I think you need to get over it. Nothing bad happened. Unfortunately it does happen but as an adult you did as required and checked the date. No big deal. How about you don't feed your 11 month old chicken based snacks? By imagining this worst case scenario where you compare it to a horrific negligence case where someone died (you or your child might have had the runs) is just daily mail fodder at best. Contact Tesco and they'll likely give you a token something as well as a refund. Really this isn't a massive issue.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 03/09/2017 15:56

And if they Daily Mail are sizing this thread up to print, fuck if you bunch of racist arseholes.

strawberrygate · 03/09/2017 15:57

feedinmg an 11 month old shitty chicken "snacks" is going to put their health at more risk. Why not just cook some chicken?

Goldenpombear · 03/09/2017 16:01

What's a chicken based snack Confused
