AIBU to think my son's name isn't that hard to pronounce?

Or is this an acceptable pronunciation!?

We live in London, so 'fear' is 1 syllable (this is relevant!)

My son is called Theodore... You know, 3 syllables, 'The-uh-door'?

All he gets is 'fear-door' Angry please tell me that this isn't an acceptable pronunciation? It makes me regret his name massively Sad

I actually can't say France with an a like ant - it just won't work with my mouth!

blackteasplease · 03/09/2017 00:04

Im from darn sarf and fear has two syllables to me!

SenecaFalls · 03/09/2017 00:04

The teddy bear is named for Theodore Roosevelt.

squoosh · 03/09/2017 00:04

GreatFuckability I love the way Welsh people say 'here' as 'hyuuuh'. I find it charming.

squoosh · 03/09/2017 00:04

Although that sounded a bit patronising!

Slightly better than our 'Gabriel' who constantly gets called 'Gabrielle' by the NHS and usually has a Miss before his name.

GreatFuckability · 03/09/2017 00:08

haha squoosh not at all! People seem to either love it or hate it as a rule! the way i say it here, ear and hear all sound the same! but i try very very hard to do it 'proper' when i'm working. a speech therapist teaching someone to talk all common isn't going to go down well!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/09/2017 00:10

It's Fraaaaaahnse. Grin

nancy75 · 03/09/2017 00:10

Exactly right Dame Grin

VinsArmy · 03/09/2017 00:11

squoosh I love that! I wish it was that way, instead it was more like when I try do the accent I end up sounding like Dick van dyke from Mary Poppins hence needing him to say it for me. My imitations are shit.

Ummmmgogo · 03/09/2017 00:11

he's 3??? I'm surprised that this has only just come up. if its the nursery staff can you ask them to say his name with an American accent? it won't be the strangest request they have had.

MummySparkle · 03/09/2017 00:15

According to google it's 'Frohn-sis' which would make sense. Dragon-sis is closer to that than 'fran-sis' Maybe because we are closer to France?!

Google agrees with me that it's 'Frahnce' though

squoosh · 03/09/2017 00:17

Well that all depends on Google's accent surely?

If I said Frahnce, I would sound like the biggest phony in the world. It really does not fit with my accent. I say Franss.

squoosh · 03/09/2017 00:19

When you've been to Paris do you say you've had a mini break in Paree?

I mean you could, and it would be technically correct, but it would also be terribly Hyacinth Bucket-ish too.

BlueberryPuffin · 03/09/2017 00:20

Two syllables is just the salt-of-the-earth Londoner pronunciation, OP. There's only two ways to avoid it.

  1. move out of London
  2. start moving in more esteemed circles Grin
SenecaFalls · 03/09/2017 00:21

My guess is that the majority of speakers of English say Franss.

BlueberryPuffin · 03/09/2017 00:21

P.s. I'm from London and fear is one syllable for me (as is ear and near and hear and so forth), but I would definitely say Thee-oh-dore.

GreatFuckability · 03/09/2017 00:22

frohnsis???? what fresh hell is that?

RandomlyGenerated · 03/09/2017 00:22

You could always go for a New York gangster style pronunciation?

SailorByTheSea · 03/09/2017 00:22

@BlueberryPuffin - I'm from London and have always lived here. I have no issue pronouncing things properly!

OP posts:
BubbleAnimal · 03/09/2017 00:25

I've been muttering this to myself... And I think I actually pronounce fear as fee-ar so make it almost two syllables 😱

nancy75 · 03/09/2017 00:25

There are lots of London accents, East London & SE are not the same and West London is a whole different thing

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/09/2017 00:27

You're right nancy

BlueberryPuffin · 03/09/2017 00:28

I'm from London and have always lived here. I have no issue pronouncing things properly!

Right. I'm not really sure what your point was in relation to my post. Some people in London will pronounce it Feardore and others won't, that's what I was saying.
