Beyondthepage Jung Chang's Wild Swans for me too, and we wondered why Chinese people were inscrutable.

Also Doris Lessing's Martha Quest series starting with The Grass is Singing, again I learnt so much about women and other lives (Rhodesia).

Under the eye of the clock by Christopher Nolan. Beautifully written insight into a mother's faith and a son's blossoming.

An Evil Cradling: Brian Keenan's account of his time as a hostage in Lebanon, exquisitely written and full of humanity.

Two more books: Elisabeth Luard
Family Life: Birth, Death and the Whole Damn Thing
I loved for her love and loyalty and the food.

And when I first visited New York I had to walk across Brooklyn Bridge for Francie Nolan from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
