Criminal record checks - are they transferable?

Posting for traffic: I previously worked for and educational employer so I had a CRB check run. I don't work there any more and have a small business. A client has asked for my drb certificate. Are they transferable or do i have to request another one? If so, how do i do this?

I'm not sure they are. Whenever I've moved employers I've had to have a new one done even if the last one was a few months prior. Also when I did a volunteer role I had to pay for a new check, they wouldn't accept the one I had through work.

stella23 · 02/09/2017 10:10

It really depends and is really up to the Client, I suppose it would also depend on how old they are. There is a new online services which means a users can check up to date info but it cost so it's not overly popular

ElizabethShaw · 02/09/2017 10:12

If your CRB check is very old then yes you will need a new one.

Once you receive your new DBS certificate you have about 10 days to pay to sign up to the update service (£13 a year) which will make it transferrable.

Celestia26 · 02/09/2017 10:12

I had one done a few years ago. You keep the certificate and it has an expiration date as far as i can remember. So it last s for a certain amount of time. Can remember how long though! Do you have your copy of the certificate from the last one you had done? Should say on there.

Rosieposy4 · 02/09/2017 10:14

They should be done every 3 years and have been transferable for about that time so with a bit of luck yours will be.

ElizabethShaw · 02/09/2017 10:15

If you need a new check, you will need to find an umbrella company who can carry it out on your behalf www.gov.uk/find-dbs-umbrella-body

Notevilstepmother · 02/09/2017 10:16

It would be up to whoever is asking it if they choose to accept your certificate or want a new one done. 3 years is often considered a cut off point but if someone wants one more recent then I think it's up to them to organise it.

Give them your current one and ask them..

Onthehighseas · 02/09/2017 10:17

A DBS (or CRB as it used to be) check is really only 'valid' on the day it is issued if you think about it. In the interests of practicality, some employers will accept old versions, but if yours is old enough to be a CRB rather than a DBS, I imagine a new employer will want a further check doing. There is no expiry date as such, some employers will accept previous employer's checks, some wont. As has been said upthread, you can sign up to the update service so it can be live whenever needed.

RockyTop · 02/09/2017 10:18

Officially speaking, once a DBS check is completed it is out of date, athough some organisations are happy to transfer them. You do now have the option to sign up to the update service however which means the check is (effectively) 'live' so additional organisations can (with consent) access an up to date version rather than you completing a new check. Different organisations may have their own policies on this though.
As a self employed person you will likely struggle to DBS check yourself (it's to do with not being able to 'ask' specific questions of yourself) and usually the organisation contracting your services would need to request the check on you.

LIZS · 02/09/2017 10:18

It depends on the employer. Some will accept a copy of a previous one, others only a new one or via the online update system.

PhantomBlooper · 02/09/2017 10:28

It is unlikely for a school or college that you will be able to transfer a DBS as there is no guarantee that something hasn't changed in the time period between then and now.

It may be they will take it in the interim whilst they await your DBS, and conduct a List 99 check. Whilst awaiting your DBS you probably won't be allowed unsupervised with any young people or vulnerable adults.

Most employers will pay for your DBS but if you are agency or ad hoc you will probably have to pay for a new one. Once you have done this make sure you sign up for the Update Service. For an annual fee anyone you give permission to can see your current certificate and then use the Update Service to check nothing has changed. If something has been added then they would have to run a whole new DBS check which would have to be paid for.

Catinabeanbag · 02/09/2017 10:38

They are transferable within the same workforce. So if your previous check is for the child workforce, and your new post is with the child workforce, you can use the old check. If you're changing workforce (previous check was for child workforce, new job is with adults) then you need a new check. If your previous DBS check was for both child and adult workforces, then you also don't need a new check as you've already been checked for both workforces. That said though, many new employers will request a new DBS anyway, especially if it's been a while since your last one.

Catinabeanbag · 02/09/2017 10:50

Just to add-old checks (years ago) are not transferable, but if you've had a check fairly recently AND signed up to the update service (that's the important bit), as long as the workforce is the same (see my previous post) then you can use the check for a new job. If the workforce changes though, you need a new check.

HoneyIshrunktheBiscuit · 02/09/2017 11:18

A new DBS should be applied for at the start of each new role (unless you have the update service). Your new employer actually has no right to use your DBS from your previous role.

Onthehighseas · 02/09/2017 12:48

Employers are allowed to use a previous DBS for a new role Honey. Its at their own risk, but it happens often.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/09/2017 12:58

There is the update service, you sign up, you get an email to remind you to pay every year.

It's in your name, not tied to an employer and employers can look it up online. It's always up to date.

I've used the service for years.

Hammersmith1818 · 23/01/2020 00:33

Can anyone recommend a site I can do a DRB check on myself as my new employer has asked me to get one. I am finding it difficulty do it.

SandyY2K · 23/01/2020 00:37

Not every organisation will accept a DBS not carried out by them.

Some accept it following completion of a risk assessment and you can start the job, while the new check is going through.

cabbageking · 23/01/2020 01:08

check out how to register it online and move it around in some cases.

ColourMyDreams · 23/01/2020 01:10

My DBS is transferable. I pay £13 per year for it.
Not every employer will accept it, but most do as it's always up to date and will give them the exact information as what is on the transferable one.

@Hammersmith1818 You should be able to do a check on the DBS website. You will probably have to apply for a new one though, unless you have a transferable one.

ColourMyDreams · 23/01/2020 01:12

Sorry, will give you the exact same information on the applied for DBS as what is contained on the transferable one.
