Is Marine Biology too specialised for undergraduate degree???

DD is set to do Biology at uni very soon and has just got back from a marine conservation expedition (8 weeks) and has decided it's definitely a huge interest to her.

She is considering changing to marine biology (something they have agreed she can do).

Is it too specialised? Thanks.

Nope, great degree. She will need to specialise in marine if she wants a job in the field

VolunteerSpear · 01/09/2017 18:44

Oh so if she did Biology she wouldn't be able to get a job in the marine field? Thanks!

DS is planning on marine biology. Can I ask what her expedition was?

whyismykid · 01/09/2017 18:47

I think that's a great idea, if she is passionate about it she will be able to focus early on and spend her summers doing relevant work / placements etc - she will then standout against her peers with biology degrees who fancy Marine related jobs.

No advice but I'm jealous of your DD! I would love to go back to uni and do a marine biology degree. It sounds so interesting.

Not at all. If she wants to go into a marine Biology type field they will have so many applications from marine biology gradulates general biology gradulates wouldn't stand a chance. My friend did Marine Biology as a first degree and now works all over the world doing very interesting things that I am very jealous of.

Great degree, very interesting, BUT, thousands of the buggars, very little chance of actually getting a job as a marine biologist.

VolunteerSpear · 01/09/2017 18:51

Thanks all, I didn't know that. What kind of jobs could she get if she doesn't end up getting to be a marine biologist? I suppose that's a big concern.

The expedition she did was in Fiji - she was taught how to dive (and got some qualification in it) and spent her time doing underwater surveys, etc. she absolutely loved it.
