Be honest, is an AS-Level in Pure Maths (grade E) worth anything?

My daughter has this, but feels like she was better off never getting it, as it just looks like she wasn't good at it, etc. (her words) how right/wrong is she?

Years ago an ex boyfriend did a maths degree and became a maths teacher with an E at A level this was 20 odd years ago though.

CordeliaScott · 01/09/2017 16:56

Are you my mom? I have an E in AS maths which I dropped off my cv as my other three a levels were much higher so it looked better overall. I guess it depends on the other grades and what she wants to do

GracesandHarrysMum · 01/09/2017 16:59

She is going off to college...

Gonna watch this as this is what ds1 has

LIZS · 01/09/2017 17:01

College to do what? It isn't likely to be of much use on its own.

GracesandHarrysMum · 01/09/2017 17:05

She's doing something unrelated to Maths, which will be a full level 3, but she just wants to know if it's worth anything (should she keep it on CV, etc.)

Dunno, but at least she has it and it's a pass. She can pick and choose when to put it on her CV or "use" it or leave it off.

I'm in my 30s and don't have A level maths, recently that shut down an opportunity for me which required that subject at A level.

OTOH I got 3 As at a level, and one D which I never put on my CV/mention any more!

LIZS · 01/09/2017 17:06

Presumably it would at least cover the year on her cv, avoiding a gap, and carries points , what else has she taken alongside?

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 01/09/2017 17:08

I agree with your DD. I would not put it on the CV. Better to pretend it never happened.

I can't think of any professional situation where a near fail at A-level maths would make her look better than not having done it at all.

GracesandHarrysMum · 01/09/2017 17:09

LIZS unfortunately, the others were linear, so she hasn't got anything for those

As a sixth form tutor I tend to say to students who have a E in AS Maths (so have dropped it and not gone to A2) that they should present it as evidence that they have tried to challenge themselves.
Maths is a challenging academic subject with a big jump from GCSE to ALevel and many students take it thinking that 'they'll be OK' when really you need to have a high level of mathematical ability (whereasGCSE you can wing it a bit)
So she could say that she took Maths with other subjects knowing it was going to challenge her and stretch her academically out of her preferred skill set but she did it because she is very motivated as a person. She has found that her learning styles are not suited to the (pure / statistics whatever paper she hated most) but she is glad she has done it. She now knows that she really wants to do XYZ other aleveks subjects college course but doesnt regret that she took the risk

Opportunities to learn about yourself are never wasted

SqueeksAway · 01/09/2017 17:13

Oops and sorry about the shockimg standard of my English I'm still in holiday mode

QuestaVecchiaCasa · 01/09/2017 17:30

I think that people should be proud to show that they attempted A level maths. There is something really stupid about how our education system encourages pupils to narrow down their subject choice to only those which they know they will pass.

Employers and Universities should grow up and recognize and value those who have kept up a broad education for as long as possible.

coffeeslave · 01/09/2017 17:35

I'm 40, have an E grade in AS level Latin and you BET that goes on my CV. I worked my butt off for that stupid AS level Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/09/2017 18:31

Oh i like that squeeks

I like that a lot

Zoloh · 01/09/2017 18:40

No, drop it. It's not a personal development record, it's an advert! It's a bit like putting TIMES REVIEWED AS MEDIOCRE on your restaurant flyer. That might be your best review ever but it's hardly going to entice someone through the door.

Glumglowworm · 01/09/2017 18:56

It's probably better left of CVs, especially as there's no gap to explain, she will have three full A levels with hopefully better grades. I assume her GCSE maths was good if she attempted the AS level?

If it gives her any UCAS points it's worth putting on UCAS if she's applying to courses that accept points from AS levels and aren't asking for specific grades (sorry it's many years since I did it so I've forgotten and things have changed a lot anyway).

LouHotel · 01/09/2017 19:33

UCAS points if its the difference between and ok university and a good one.
