Passing up a well paid job on late notice

I have worked for years within a 'niche' which I wasn't that keen on. Around 2 years ago I ventured into a different job in a different area- but didn't like the people all that much and felt that it was getting me down so much that I left.

As I left with no place to go to- I basically had an interview back in June - I got offered the job in July - and (due to them really messing around) am due to start on Wednesday of next week.

Here's the thing- during the (very long) time it took them to offer and confirm the job, I have set up a small freelance company and am starting to see good results. To give some idea I've had around half of what would Be my usual salary each month since I started and am now getting more requests and think I could really grow my own business .

I'm due to start the new job on next week, but am starting to seriously consider going it alone and worry that I will really regret it if I don't.

Has anyone here done something similar? Any advice or opinion - am scared but sort of relishing the opportunity

It sounds like you know deep down what you want to do.

If you've been offered one well paid job you'll be offered another in the future. That's if you ever need to apply for one.

Sounds exciting!

Thank you! That's almost what I'm thinking - I can always get a job (well sort of) but working freelance has worked out so much better than I imagined - but am worried about the uncertainty

Does your freelance company require all your time at this point? Will the new job allow you to build up even more contacts?

Start the job and freelance part time to build up savings and a reputation

Give it say 6 months and reaccess

That's been the thing Blue- I've hesitated from pitching for the larger jobs as thought I could do the small ones around work- but if I got say the thirds of the larger ones I'd be ok- also- have avoided "networking" as I didn't want anyone in my industry to know because of the new job and think I could probably also pick up more from contacts.

@green that was my plan, but starting to realise that I don't think I can do both- people would expect me to be able to do things for them, and I wouldn't be able to do it if I'm at full time work. The savings thing is really bothering me though as really it's a situation that I've sort of forced rather than planned, iyswim.

Also a it's now Thursday and I'm due to start next Wednesday- they really messed me around as was ready to start and offered the job a month ago- but think I would feel terrible to let them down now
