Council House Advice?

so basically I'm pregnant due Oct 2017.
due to circumstances i need to apply for council housing and i qualify.
the only issue is i wish to continue my studies at uni in sept 2018, however the distance isn't possible to commute (4 hour train each way), however i have read on my councils site

'Please note that due to government legislation changes, this Council will be offering all applicants aged 35 and under a 2 year fixed term tenancy.'

i can't afford to rent privately etc, will i be able to move to uni in sept 2018 (rent privately using loan/grants etc), or will i have to drop out of uni all together?

thanks.

Do an online distance learning degree with the Open University. They offer excellent courses and you can live where you like. Being a new parent also this will probably be great as you can fit your studies around your childcare options.

Hi, sorry for some reason Its on some privacy setting. But it was regarding the message below.

"Hi all, Just a really quick one. We have been waiting on the council list for almost more then 10 years. And recently we updated from three bedrooms to two bedrooms as we do not require a 3 bed no more. And our waiting list came from 140 being on the list to almost top 5. Was just wondering how quickly could we go from there or how long more do we have to wait? Really appreciate your guys times." Many Thanks

How long is a peace of string?
I was waiting a couple of weeks- then six weeks until I signed my paperwork. I have a disability.
The lady next to me was waiting a year one side, the other side was an emergency placement due to eviction.
So it all depends on circumstances.

Hi wannabestressfree, thanks for the reply. I am aware of the fact that it all depends on the circumstances and also It could be a month to 6 months. It's just that I have heard that once you are close to 1 to 3 on the list after bidding then every week you get closer and closer maybe within a couple of months to few months you could move into the council house. Was wondering was anyone else was that close like 6 or 7 on the list and how long it took them to move to the council house.

But
Someone could die
Someone could be evicted
Someone could move.

That's what I mean. You just don't know. I was housed quickly. It just depends on circumstances and area.

I might be wrong but I don't think having a 2 year fixed tenancy means you have to stay there for 2 years. It means the council can't ask you to end the tenancy earlier than 2 years (unless you don't pay rent or whatever). It's more to do with the minimum length of time the council has to offer you the tenancy. You can hand your notice in whenever you want I think

www.gov.uk/housing-association-homes/types-of-tenancy

Note it says in the link "Your tenancy can be ended if: you give the housing association 4 weeks’ notice in writing"

Back in the day council tenants were given lifetime secure tenancies but that's no more and I think the fixed tenancy thing reflects that. You can hand in your notice whenever. No council is going to force someone to keep a council property they no longer want that someone else can have.

You'll also have an introductory period. The link I posted says 12m and that's what my local council is too. I don't think you'd get a fixed term immediately so again it'll be more flexible if you only need a year.

I left my council flat after 8 months. What council are you looking to be housed with
