To be disappointed with cinema

Looking forward to next week as DS is back to school. Tried to book to go to the cinema one morning but earliest showings are 12.20! No good as have to be back for school run at 3.00. I've mentioned it to then via Twitter as got an unlimited card that can't use next week

The thing is, if "plenty of people" wanted to go to the cinema in the morning then they would open. It's certainly not reasonable to expect a business to lose money so that every circumstance is catered for.

OR their market research is rubbish. Food is their profit anyway. Maybe "brunch screenings" would be popular and profitable?

I know I'd go when I'm WingFH.

SerfTerf · 31/08/2017 20:06

The answer is clearly to have another baby and then you can go to Mother and Baby screenings. Can you borrow someone else's baby perhaps? Or improvise with a sling, and a heavily swaddled teddy bear with a muslin over its head.

Or that. You're a genius Grin

Judydreamsofhorses · 31/08/2017 20:07

Our independent cinema does mornings, but they tend to be specific for certain groups - carers and babies, and pensioners, I think. They do loads of "autism friendly" and signed screenings too. I love daytime cinema so much - I'm a lecturer with a long summer holiday and like to go alone to the 1pm-ish screening, with a coffee and a salted popcorn. I saw A Single Man in an otherwise totally empty screen, it was brill.

MaroonPencil · 31/08/2017 20:12

What did you want to see, OP?

Peachyking000 · 31/08/2017 20:12

I can't believe some of the responses on this thread - the comments about bored SAHM's and people with time to fritter are awful Shock

I agree with you OP, I sometimes work shifts and would love to be able to go to the cinema when DS is at school, but our local cinema doesn't do early showings either

Xmasbaby11 · 31/08/2017 20:17

That is a shame. At our local cinemas there are screenings between 11 and 12 and they are reasonably busy. There's a nice cafe there so that helps. I used to go to the baby showing at 11am and it was very popular!

Brittbugs80 · 31/08/2017 20:18

Our Empire opens at 10am. I go to see films only I would watch on my own during the week. It's wonderful and I'm often the only one in there with my salted popcorn!

A 1230 film might be cutting it fine, how far is school from cinema?

It's a business & if there aren't enough customers - they aren't going to open.
You'll just have to wait for the DVD & add another nail to their coffin.

Mummaofboys · 31/08/2017 20:21

God forbid a SAHM do something for herself. I do think you could probably make the cinema though, I find they gave dark less adverts in an afternoon.

Mummaofboys · 31/08/2017 20:22

Far less adverts*

CoolCarrie · 31/08/2017 20:24

I love going to the pictures in the day time, went to see The History Boys when it first came out and my ndn & I were the only people there, it was great.

OlennasWimple · 31/08/2017 20:27

Same situation here, OP - I want to go and see a horror film (so not suitable for the kids to come along too). Earliest showing is 7pm Angry

DrMadelineMaxwell · 31/08/2017 20:33

I used to have Fridays off and was always disappointed that I could rarely fit in watching a film.

If they started on time, it wouldn't be such a problem. But they always seem to advertise the time that the adverts actually start here as the start time, so the film starts later and ends too late for me to drive the 15 mins to get to DC's school.

herecomesthsun · 31/08/2017 20:33

Hmm. I don't see why there wouldn't be a market for a "film club" along the lines of a book club, so like minded people could meet up to see really good recent films mid to late morning if they are so minded, maybe with a lunch time discussion at a local cafe afterwards.

Could be very civilised.

RainbowPastel · 31/08/2017 20:35

Our Odeon does Silver Screen for OAP's. Anyone can go though as I went before with DH. You get free tea/coffee and biscuits. It's usually older films though.

SerfTerf · 31/08/2017 20:35

That would be lovely here Smile

FUNM · 31/08/2017 20:35

Save money and watch in comfort of ur own home watch it free online :)

traffordtimes · 31/08/2017 20:45

I don't think bored SAHMs are their target audience!
So, for those of us who are struggling with the logic over which kinds of people the cinema want as customers, and which they don't... Which demographic is it that they are targeting with that 12.30 screening? I don't really get who all those non SAHMs are who are infinitely preferable to the cinema, and want to see a film bang on lunchtime?
Without that piece of information, the comments about SAHMs could just seem like bitchiness...

scrabble1 · 31/08/2017 20:59

The cinema is one of the busiest and biggest in UK. They always do early screenings, so that's why couldn't understand the change

How do you all know OP is a SAHM? Maybe she works evenings? Or shifts? Maybe she works 3 12 hour days per week, or maybe she's a multi millionaire and doesn't need to work Grin.

Thunderblunder · 31/08/2017 21:06

Our local independent cinema does two silver screen mornings a week. The films start between 10-10.30 and there is normally 3 different films on each morning. They are all films that are currently showing at the cinema of an evening.
When we last went the cinema was full and it ranged from people in their early 20s up to pensioners. The younger people were shift workers who couldn't always go of an evening because of either work or children. You get a free hot drink and biscuit and they do a prize draw of seat numbers but I can't remember what you win. It might have been a cinema gift voucher.

WillowWeeping · 31/08/2017 21:13

When I was a SAHM going to the cinema with friends was a once a week guilty pleasure - I loved it Smile

Sorry yours doesn't cater for you to do the same

BabychamSocialist · 31/08/2017 21:16

Me and DH saw Fifty Shades of Grey at 10am on a Monday morning (mainly because we were too old and embarrassed to go and see it on a Friday night) and it was bloody lovely. Perfect seats, almost empty, no kids in the cinema at all, nice clean screen.

It's our favourite time to go now when DH is at home. We left the kids at home a few weeks ago to go and see Spider-Man ourselves at that time. Again, lovely!

AvoidingCallenetics · 31/08/2017 21:23

I must be getting old because I think MN is going to the dogs. It seems so unnecessarily spiteful and bitchy at the moment. God forbid a sahm should have some free time and want to do something nice.
