To take a range or medicine on holiday?

Had a mega argument discussion with DH before leaving for holiday. Going to Southern Europe with 1 year old DS. I'd packed Calpol, baby Neurofen, saline solution + snot sucker and a thermometer. DH insisted we should only take the Calpol (at a push) as everything else is completely OTT. My point is that I don't want to be looking for suitable baby medicines in a foreign country, I don't speak the language/English is not very common there. I should add for fairness that DS is very rarely poorly.

AIBU to pack medicines just in case? What do you pack when you go abroad with babies?

Your dh would hate me the the stuff I take......and usually end up supplying to families who think like your dh......!!!!
For the room it takes and for peace of mind just bung it in, nothing worse than hot weather, ill children and lack of sleep!

StinkyVonWinky · 31/08/2017 16:38

Yep, take them all. It's all very well saying stuff is available everywhere but if you don't know where the nearest open pharmacy is at 3 am when you need the medicine you'll be pretty annoyed you didn't pack them.

autofill - Shock!! Your poor Dad! I have to admit I laughed, but partly out of sympathy as well as amusement.

Having had toothache abroad and struggled to find anything other than paracetamol, I have literally felt his pain!!

bigbluebus · 31/08/2017 16:42

I think you are being sensible. I have just come back from a holiday in France with DH and I took Paracetemol, Ibuprofen, Imodium, Piriton and anti histamine cream as well as plasters - and we didn't have any children with us and are thankfully very rarely ill! We didn't actually need any of them whilst we were away, but I will be packing the same next time we go.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 31/08/2017 17:04

Having had Bali Belly I don't like to go anywhere abroad without Immodium Grin (although that definitely needed some stronger stuff - Balinese medical clinics surprisingly good!).

I tend to take lots of stuff - calpol, bite stuff etc. Can't be arsed tracking that stuff down when on hol.

dementedpixie · 31/08/2017 17:14

I also take stuff with us: paracetamol, ibuprofen, bite and sting cream, antihistamines, plasters, etc as it's easier to take it than have to go looking for it in an unfamiliar place

Me264 · 31/08/2017 17:14

I'm with your DH ... for my 1 year old DS I took a single bottle of calpol to Spain, and only because he is periodically teething and needs a dose to sleep. Haven't used a snot sucker since he was tiny and am I the only person who never really uses a thermometer? We do have one but I think I've only used it once ... I just use the back of my hand to feel his forehead and see if he feels hot.

oldlaundbooth · 31/08/2017 17:16

That's exactly what I took with me.

Your DH is unreasonable.

imnottoofussed · 31/08/2017 17:29

I take pain killers for me and DD, imodium, and antihistamines plus some antiseptic cream and plasters.

Ttbb · 31/08/2017 17:31

No, we take the same with us. You might need it while travelling or in the middle of the night. It would be unreasonable not to take it.

Merida83 · 31/08/2017 17:33

i would definitely pack and take all of those too! just seems very sensible to me!
