AIBU to think DD should redo her Science GCSE? (Got a C)

DD did her GCSEs back in 2013!

I know you're all going to tell me to stay out of it because of her age (20) but I'm not pressuring her or anything, it's more of just providing her with that facts.

She has an access course in science where she did well and applied for some of the better unis but didn't get her favourite (Sussex) as was told she needed to have 2 Bs in 2 Sciences or the dual science. She had 2 Cs in the dual science award, so got into a not so good uni, although it isn't bad. It's not that great.

She is doing Biological Sciences so I assume that's rather a competitive job market??? She must be better off getting her degree from the best uni she can!?

AIBU to think she shouldn't go this year and should retake her science GCSE???

I disagree - GCSEs are still important - as long as they pass the maths and English C or above

It's asked for in 75% of jobs

Even teachers with a degree still need to pass Maths and English otherwise it's a none starter

Bekabeech · 31/08/2017 11:08

@GreenTulips - where has there be anything about Maths and English?
Yes she does need those, and if she wanted to be a Primary teacher a C at GCSE. RTFT

Neither are Russell group are they? I doubt anyone will care much between them tbh. I would ha e thought either would be glad of anyone they could get Hmm Hmm Hmm

I have RTFT thank you

It was a reply to the poster who said nobody cares about GCSEs after you turn 20

So can you RTFT?

corythatwas · 31/08/2017 13:01

GreenTulips, the point is that nobody cares if you have since acquired a higher qualification in the same subject. Which is what this thread is about- and I think we all understood that that is what the poster meant.

Nobody asks to see my A-level in the subject in which I have a PhD, but my GCSE in German is still relevant because I never took that any further.

The OP's dd is about to get a degree, and could spend the extra year gaining valuable work experience in the field of science. Any future employer will know not only that she has more science than her GCSE would suggest, but also that she must have passed her maths, English and GCSE science to get on the degree course in the first place.

Fibbertigibbet · 31/08/2017 13:03

The only point in having a higher grade at GCSE would be to get into a higher ranked university, and it's too late for that!

Further study, jobs etc. will care more about her degree than these GCSE grades. YABU.
