After a conversation on a flight yesterday I was just wondering if you have ever lost money that you wished tou had just blown or even thrown in the street.

Once when we were young and stupid we bought a cat D car without realising. Totally conned but lost about £4000.

Once I also got a Christmas present with £100 in. I didn't realise and threw it out with the Christmas rubbish as it was a white envelope against white wrapping.

My friend once lost 10k on Northern rock shares.

Another 2k on a holiday that wasn't all covered by insurance.

It is gutting when you think about it. I wish I had blown it on Champagne and takeaways.

Ahh these things happen I guess.

Yep. £250 to Virgin. We moved half way through a contract they said was transferable. I wrote on the contract we may move and they should contact me if there might be an issue. I had discussed this fully with the salesman who assured me there would be a refund if they couldn't provide services at a new property.

They couldn't provide services. They said the conversation didn't happen. They said the note on the contract was irrelevant because the contract said such exits had to be agreed by mutual agreement and in writing by both parties.

Eventually after about three hours on the phone, (to the Philippines and conversations about them sending spotters), and two registered letters they paid me back £150.

Thieving gits. Not sure how that sort of conduct helps them. I will never ever deal with any part of the Virgin Group again.

Clearing out my wardrobe found one of my old handbags at the bottom. Inside was £50 in national garden gift vouchers, which had been a Christmas gift from my deceased father many years before. They were all out of date by years.

Yes. DH, about GBP250,000 in unpaid salary and bonuses, about 20 years ago. The company he worked for (he was very high up in a relatively small company, the other Directors wanted to take the company in a direction that benefited them personally whereas DH actually cared about the clients and employees and had blocked it, they'd wanted him out for ages but had no legitimate reason) pushed him out whilst he was in hospital with cancer. They refused to pay knowing he'd have to go to tribunal, which he did. Knowing exactly how ill he was, and how dire our situation was, they then offered a very much reduced amount (less than two months salary) to settle outside of the tribunal. We had no choice but to accept as at that point we didn't even know if he was going to survive. One of the people involved in this was a very old 'friend' of mine, so close that, amongst other things, I'd nursed them through pneumonia. I'd love to know what they personally got out of doing it. We've still got debt that really is all connected to this period in time. However, I rarely think about it these days, DH recovered eventually (thank you NHS!) we've got a lovely life, lovely children and we're really happy. Things did not work out so well for any of those involved however, in all sorts of ways. I believe in karma.

About £1000 I lent to one of my brothers when we really didn't have much of an income. He never paid it back. I have no relationship with him any more, if I did I'm sure he'd try to rinse us for a hundred times the amount.

He did this with other family members and they've also gone NC with him. Idiot!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 02/09/2017 13:06

Judas, £250k??? Omg. Hope the fuckers got what they deserved.

GorgeousLadyOfWrangling · 02/09/2017 13:10

£120 pick pocketed (was for my road tax)
Handbag left on train (£400 in it, don't ask) Got it back within half an hour but empty.
And owed £200 expenses from one company I left and was unpaid by another, about £150

TheHamptons · 02/09/2017 13:20

Two lots of redundancy pay as companies went bust. I got compensation for one, 17 years later. £150. Gee, that makes up for the £2k you owe me.

My brother owes me £55 right now. He'll never pay it, but that's because he's a knob. I should know better.

I once had my purse stolen about 15 years ago and had fun catching up with the cards...£1k spent but it was all refunded.

Husband was owed loads by firm he worked for: bonuses/salary increases promised, given in shares. I saw the signs and warned him....firm went bust, owing him about £3k we'll never see.

Meh!

LadyBitterSparkles · 02/09/2017 13:29

Just recently my DD took all the notes from my purse to play with, has put them somewhere safe and we've got no idea where they are! £80 gone!

Holidayhooray · 02/09/2017 13:29

I wrote on the contract we may move and they should contact me if there might be an issue*

Unless both have explicitly agreed that particular point and signed that specific point, then you can't seriously expect a scribbled note on a contract to stand up in court!

LadyFlumpalot · 02/09/2017 14:14

Agreed with a relative to swap £70 of vouchers with them for cash. Sent the vouchers (she was going to pop the cash in my account on receipt) and they never arrived. Very cross.

n0ne · 02/09/2017 15:22

£800 deposit on a flat. When I moved out, the agent messed me around then basically disappeared. We tried everything to get the money back, my mum even tracked down the owner's home address and served him
legal papers but it all came to nought. Money I could ill afford to lose too. Bastards.

n0ne · 02/09/2017 15:29

Oh, and a bag full of my favourite cool/vintage clothes, a digital camera and some other bits. Was on the way back from Glastonbury festival, the coach stopped at the services then left without us. Our bags were in the coach. Luckily I had a small bag with purse, phone etc on me so managed to call my mum who arranged for another coach to pick me and distraught mate up several hours later, but I never managed to track down our bags.

Queenofthestress · 02/09/2017 15:39

Just shy of a thousand conned out of me by an ex-mate

goldangel · 02/09/2017 15:51

On honeymoon in Bali (13 years ago) exchanged sterling at one of the many street places, he counted the currency in front of us but somehow managed to short us! Can't remember how much but remember feeling awful at the time!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 02/09/2017 15:55

got a relative a 2nd card on my credit card account to use for a specific and time-limited purpose when she was skint. She us it for that purpose, and then a fair few shopping sprees on top, ultimately borrowing double what we'd agreed. She said she could not afford to pay back more than £5 per month, which didn't even touch the interest. Obviously I cancelled the card immediately, but was still left with the debt.

TBH it's my own fault - there's reason she was skint in the first place, and it's because she's just beyond useless with money. Should have known better.

DonutCone · 02/09/2017 16:11

This thread is bringing back some horrible memories.

Times as a skint student I went for lunch with 'friends' who when the bill came said could they pay next time as they didn't have any cash... Shockingly there never was a next time!

Had my purse stolen with £80 in and all my Xmas vouchers I had as presents.

peepoo · 02/09/2017 16:57

I lost a lot of money on a holiday, insurance wouldn't pay out.

bakedbeansandtuna · 02/09/2017 17:41

£400 on a rent deposit via an agency in London. Didn't pass credit check. They kept the money.

BR62Y · 02/09/2017 17:47

A bloke I knew lost £1m plus and basically his whole wealth by selling his shares in the business to a company who gave him shares in their company in return but on the condition he couldn't sell for two years. They lost 95% of their value in that time!!! Ouch....

I have lost a few grand on shares in the past.

Left my purse in a taxi once. Normally I never carry much cash but I had over £100 to pay B&B. Went to police station and cab company but someone must have pocketed it.

I have had a few bikes stolen. The worse was a new one I had very foolishly left outside a shop when I dashed in to pay.

We got burgled in previous house and had no contents insurance as DH did not think it was worth it (we do now!) Some cash and expensive laptop was taken, including some honeymoon photos I hadn't backed up.

Stupidly given to a couple of scammers in the street with some sob story about how they had been mugged and couldn't get home.

Ragwort · 02/09/2017 18:29

We've loaned twice to people (one a relative) who were desperate to pay a deposit on a rental - over £1k each time .............. and got nothing more than a few pounds repaid.

Lesson learned ........ never loan to anyone, I would rather make a gift; particularly when the relative spends stupid amounts on luxuries and non-essentials. It's hard not to hold a grudge.

My ex DH owed me about £2k after our divorce settlement, never saw that again - but over 35 years ago & he has since died so I have come to terms with that. My life was considerably happier than his after the divorce.

A few £s recently when I stupidly bought a load of tickets up front for a group of friends and then they couldn't all make the event, I've written that off. Grin

Stupidly given to a couple of scammers in the street with some sob story about how they had been mugged and couldn't get home.

I nearly fell for that once, in the end I offered to walk with the person to the bus stop and pay their fare ........ surprisingly they then changed their mind - the same person does the same trick in our town nearly every day - this is five years after he tried it on with me.

hollyisalovelyname · 02/09/2017 18:48

Yes
Joint money
Bad investments by dh Sad
Very large sum.
And
Quite large sum
