Nits - please help

I've been treating me & the kids got nits but having a nightmare. I used Hedrin 8 hour mousse today, rinsed & then combed with a nitty gritty and found a massive live one. I'm at the end of my tether. I comb all the time, have tried Hedrin and lyclear and nothing seems to be shifting them. Should I do Hedrin tomorrow again?
Aibu to ask for your help as I am literally at the end of my tether

I've been through everything with the bloody creatures.

Had fairly good results with using Listerine mouthwash. The original one as daughter is blonde.
Have heard good results with Avon Skin So Soft original dry oil spray, its the one they use as a midge repellant.
Most satisfying was straighteners as the little evil creatures fried.

Thanks - will try those. It was very depressing having Hedrin on all day only to find a giant live one when I combed 😩 I have quite a lot of hair so found the Hedrin hard to get on totally

Sadly they have become immune to a lot of treatments now.
Just use nit comb and go through hair with conditioner every other day until you are nit free.

mikeyssister · 30/08/2017 21:34

I smother the hair totally and utterly with a cheap conditioner and leave it on in a shower camp for 20 mins and then combe out.

3 days later repeat and continue for 21 days until not nits are found.

If you're combing properly and there's no re-infection you should be clear.

Hair dye is good for killing em. The schwarzkopf extra evil smelling ones especially

Raver84 · 30/08/2017 21:47

I read somewhere vodka works. Once you've got rid use tea tree conditioner on hair as they hate tea tree and conditioner makes hair hard for them to grip. Obvs tie back hair for school anf spray with tea tree oil mixed with water and then a blast of hairspray.

Allthewaves · 30/08/2017 21:49

Hedrin once seem to kill everything. Bugger to get out. I did wet conditioner comb with nitty gritty every couple of days for two weeks after just to make sure we were clear.

Allthewaves · 30/08/2017 21:51

Also used couple of bottles just on my hair. Mil came round and sectioned it to put it on over the bath so it was literally dripping. I looked greased for a week after

JemmyBloocher · 30/08/2017 21:51

I found Hedrin useless too. And Vamousse. I always dye my hair if I've got them too and use Full Marks on the kids. It's always seemed to do the job. I dye mine because my dh is super crap at combing and can't expect my kids to.

PeaFaceMcgee · 30/08/2017 21:52

Do they drown if you lie down in the bath with your hair completely submerged? (Serious Q!)

I heard blow-drying hair as routine disrupts the breeding cycle as the eggs dry out in the heat.. not sure if there's anything in it..

LineysRun · 30/08/2017 21:52

Nit comb and conditioner every day, for a week. Properly. Then nit comb and conditioner twice a week. FOREVER till secondary school

theymademejoin · 30/08/2017 21:54

Loads of conditioner then comb it out. Repeat every second day for at least 2 weeks.

PeaFaceMcgee · 30/08/2017 21:58

Found the hairdryer study - surprisingly effective (always blow-dry my daughter's hair and she's never had an infestation - just a few dried looking old nits)

Try to keep calm they're little bastards but you'll get rid of them eventually! Make sure you're changing bed sheets and towels regularly, keep combing out every night, lots of tea tree shampoo/conditioner/hair sprays. If hedrins stopped working maybe swap and use full marks for a while?
