To think I've had it and will have to shell out?

Was painting a chair with blue gloss paint. Had sheet underneath chair. When I was finished I removed the sheet and to my horror there is blue paint all over the brown carpet.

Have tried nail polish remover and hot water and jabbing at it with a knife but no joy. A quick google suggests that the carpet is fucked. Does anyone know of any other way to get gloss paint out?

thanks!

No. Get a rug.

I can't belive you thought a sheet would be enough!

thewintergirl · 30/08/2017 10:59

I did think it would be enough - I know now!

I would've thought a sheet would be enough and it has been in the past for me! Wonder if you could get it professionally cleaned? Maybe look on groupon?

Or get a rug until you can replace the carpet xx

If the paint has dried then yeah, you are screwed.

Get some tester pots in other colours and create a unique work of art on the carpet then aggressively require visitors to admire it before they walk on it!

Vermillionrouge · 30/08/2017 13:25

Don't think all is lost yet. Get some proper paint remover. Start with white spirit and if that fails move on to the stuff used to revive dried out paintbrushes.

Be prepared to take your time as you don't want to damage the carpet pile. Equip yourself with some colour fast cloths and a lot of cotton buds. Apply paint remover and rub only where absolutely necessary. Be patient - work a bit at a time. I have rescued carpets from gloss paint before now

Forgot to say, you might also try baby oil on a small area as some types of gloss paint crumble and break down when exposed to baby oil.

Last thing after cleaning either way is a gentle swab with liquid detergent and a dab with clean water.

Ttbb · 30/08/2017 13:41

Try removing it with paint solvent. Mineral turpentine is usually fine for gloss paint.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 30/08/2017 13:43

I was about to suggest oil too!
Mineral oil is supposed to be the best.

hellsbellsmelons · 30/08/2017 13:45

WD40 can do most things but not sure about this one.
Give it a go anyway.

FrogsSpawnofSanta · 30/08/2017 13:56

If you have no luck with the cleaning suggestions and it has a reasonably deep pile then you could carefully trim it with scissor. If the paint is sitting at the top of the pile then it might work rather than shelling out for a new one.

newmum7369 · 30/08/2017 14:02

Sorry OP, it probably is fucked. Speaking from experience after my Jack Russell terrier once brushed up against my wet gloss paintwork.

thewintergirl · 30/08/2017 15:09

thanks all, I will give it a go with turps/oil but have covered it with a rug for now.

Professional carpet cleaning will get it out

Newtothis2017 · 30/08/2017 15:43

Have pm'ed you the name of some really good stuff that worked for me with nail varnish and paint

Jaxhog · 30/08/2017 15:48

Depends on what the carpet is made of. Why not ask someone in your local independent carpet store?

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 30/08/2017 16:09

Try using brush restorer. It's for paint brushes which have dried paint in them.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 30/08/2017 16:43

Look on the tin and see what it says to use to clean the brush. It may be water soluble, so try soap and a nail brush.

EauPea · 30/08/2017 17:31

Let it dry fully, then gently rub with very fine sandpaper.

Takes a bit of time but it does work.
