AIBU to think Biological Sciences is a better choice than Zoology?

Hi Ladies! DD is currently starting her UCAS application for 2018/19.

She is very bright (got an A in Biology, an A in Geography, an A in Psychology and a B in chemistry).

She is pretty set on Zoology, ideally wants to end up in research, but would quite like to do conservation, etc.

I think Biological Sciences is great to keep her doors open. She enjoyed all aspects of it during her a levels.

AIBU? Which is the best uni for Zoology anyway? Don't the top unis normally focus on subjects?

Thanks.

I went to Sussex! When I went it was considered a very reputable uni for Biological Sciences. Fantastic teaching staff, great location and great experience.

Sussex is good.

I read zoology at Oxford (think they only do biology now). Everyone started with biology then chose between biology, botany and Zoology. Many (most?) options were common across all 3 degrees - they just had different core courses.

It doesn't really make much difference what she does at undergrad level. It's at postgraduate level that she would really start to specialise.

Dd was advised by her biology teacher to do a broad initial degree as there is plenty of time to specialise and to keep her options open.

Y son has a degree in zoo biology an has ended up working in a call centre, his wife did the same degree but is now doing a second in a medical specialism, the plan is that he will do his masters when she gets her new job (under supplied) my dad's friend is heavily involved in conservation and he complains that no-one seems to be studying British wildlife so there are vacancies for people with those skills

(just to clarify, zoo biology is very different to zoology although they sound similar Smile - it is more along the lines of an applied course and is related to zoos and exotic animal care and conservation etc, whereas zoology is a broad category of biology and is not zoo-related)
