Bonfires

I'm getting sick of my neighbours constantly having bonfires in the summer. Every single time there's a dry, warm day, the bonfires start. I'm sick of having to attempt to sleep with my windows shut in hot weather. My childrens' bedrooms are currently 29 degrees. I've had to bring the washing in, and hopefully my work clothes won't stink of smoke tomorrow. It's not the same neighbour, or the council might take action. It's several, some on the same street, some whose gardens back on to ours.

For context, urban area, lots of semi-detached houses. Fairly big gardens, but not acres of rural land between houses. Our next door neighbours admit that they burn their garden waste because they don't want to pay £50 a year to have it collected. I suspect others are the same.

If you do bonfires, why? Do you think about your neighbours or just not give a shit?

Where do you live? Confused your thread title literally made me think 'ah bonfires no one has them anymore'!

And 29c? Really, where are you?!

Does sound very antisocial and annoying though.

South east. London suburb. Kids bedrooms face south and get the sun all day, which whacks the temperature right up. It's not 29 outside (but has been pretty hot), but we've not been in most of today so the windows were closed.

I've had a lot of fires in my incinerator these past few weeks. I've been having a clear up of the garden and burning the wooden waste. My reasons for doing it now are that I have the summer off and won't get time again once school and work start up again.

However I have done my best to choose afternoons where others are at work and no washing out. I've avoided weekends and evenings.

My neighbours are very judgemental about messy gardens so they have a choice of fire for a few days or my garden having a broken down shed and chopped bushes in the corner til I get a chance to do it some other time.

Haven't got transport for the dump and probably couldn't afford garden clearance services.

28c here too imsticking. East Anglia area.

We live in a built up area (city suburbs) and don't burn garden waste but occasionally in the summer have fire in the chiminea or a barbecue. It's nice to sit out as the evening gets cooler around a fire with a beer/ wine. You raise a good point, maybe we're selfish as it just hadn't occurred to us that it might be an issue for others. I mean we're not totally obnoxious and try to do it away from fence lines and at times when people are unlikely to have their washing out (I.e. evenings) but even so, had just thought that fires and barbecues are just part of summer evenings. Our neighbours smoke (we don't) but unfortunately it's all part of outdoor living in a community.

They should be illegal. Bloody antisocial things!

echt · 28/08/2017 21:44

Making bonfires illegal would be a good idea, though councils would need to raise their game to get buy-in.
I live in Australia, and all bonfires in my area are banned because of bushfire risks. At the same time, we have a huge wheelie bin for garden rubbish which is collected fortnightly, one for recycling, also fortnightly, and a smaller weekly household bin.

I always do my burns on rainy days. Less likely that neighbours will be bothered then, I think.

Our council charge £85 per year to collect garden waste. Two years ago it was £65 per year. I compost what I can, but the neighbour has conifer hedges against our boundary, and I have a lot of woody shrubs to prune. I probably burn for a couple of hours, 2-3 times a year.

Wartymcwartwart · 29/08/2017 07:26

Horrid things should be banned until autumn. The allotments near us have lovely woody smelling ones. The houses near us have bike blackened smoke rubber burning ones. Makes the washing smell and annoys me having to close the window.

*vile not bike!
