To think I'm never going to find well paid work

That fits around school hours?

Ideally I'd want to work in an office; sales/admin/customer service etc.

AIBU to think that I'm never going to find something where I can be there to pick up and drop off my DD from school?

It's very hard to find, I had to take a few years away from the office & take a pay cut to make it happen.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 28/08/2017 19:54

Sadly I think it is incredibly difficult to find - it's the holy grail isn't it really?

John4703 · 28/08/2017 20:01

I used to work in a call centre and we had a lot of part time staff (I know zero hours contracts get a lot of bad publicity) and many of them worked 6 hours each day, Monday to Friday, and took lots of days off, without pay, during the school holidays.

It was customer service and while the pay was not great it was flexible and suited a lot of working parents.

Ttbb · 28/08/2017 20:02

Nope.

BackieJerkhart · 28/08/2017 20:02

How much would you be hoping to earn?

Poisongirl81 · 28/08/2017 20:04

What's well paid?

babybigapple · 28/08/2017 20:04

Maybe not every day but would a compromise not be to work a couple of longer days and then have shorter days in which you can do this?

Personally I'd not employ someone who steadfastly refused to only work 'school hours' as you can guarantee as soon as they needed something else suit them they'd be off somewhere else. Someone who would compromise though is a different story.

Halfsack · 28/08/2017 20:09

Well, id be buggered. I'd love to be able to compromise but sadly there is no-one, other than myself available to do the school run so unfortunately the only hours I could ever work would be 9-3. I currently do MDS at a school but the pay is rubbish.

It is possible, I've got a part time job a few days a week that fits in with school. It's tricky during the school holidays but do have family local who look after my children on days when my husband and I are both working.

How about look for jobs in schools. They are always looking for lunchtime assistants in our school.
I do exam invigilating as well and that fits in well (only a few months a year though).

museumum · 28/08/2017 20:12

Does your school not offer after school club?

Tralalalalz · 28/08/2017 20:15

Why can't you use childcare before and after school on work days?

Halfsack · 28/08/2017 20:15

Not at the minute. They do odd clubs for a week. I already am a lunchtime assistant but I'd like to earn more money. I just feel a bit trapped as the only way it seems is to do 9-5 and give all your earnings to a childminder.

Gorgosparta · 28/08/2017 20:15

What do you class as well paid?

Halfsack · 28/08/2017 20:16

Childcare costs a fortune doesn't it, meaning my earnings would likely be nothing once that had been paid.

OP posts:
TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 28/08/2017 20:16

Even with before and after school club it is hard where I am to find good hours. Small town with few jobs. At least half an hour commute, more like an hour for more work. Would love to be proved wrong though!

Halfsack · 28/08/2017 20:16

Something more than £200 a month. I'd be happy with 400-500 a month

Have you thought of working from home in the evenings to supplement your wage from the school?

BackieJerkhart · 28/08/2017 20:17

Could you register as a childminder yourself?

babybigapple · 28/08/2017 20:18

How are you handing over all your money to a childminder when you'd be working 9-5 and paying for what, two hours a day after school?

3littlebadgers · 28/08/2017 20:18

It is impossible. I became a TA but my wages barely cover the bills never mind anything else.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 28/08/2017 20:19

Which geographical area are you looking in?

Halfsack · 28/08/2017 20:21

I'd love to work from home but my searches have only ever bought up the likes of Avon/kleeneze etc. I'm in the Derbyshire area.

I think it is quite hard to find well paid work that fits round school hours. Depends what you mean by well paid though and what qualifications you've got. Working evenings is a good idea if you have a partner to babysit. Then no childminding expenses.

Halfsack · 28/08/2017 20:21

I wouldn't be interested in Childminding. I don't particularly enjoy other people's kids lol

I have NVQ level 2 and 3 in business management. But that's as far as I got before heading down the family route. Lol
