Am I too old?

I want to go back for a third time and do my GCSE's. I got ungraded for maths first time. B/C for English, was predicted an A but had to escorted out of the exam so my coursework carried me through. I went back 3 years ago to do them again and had to drop out at the end of the year. Would I be unreasonable to try again?

Never to old!!!

PandorasXbox · 28/08/2017 10:38

Of course not.

StoorieHoose · 28/08/2017 10:38

I'm 43 and doing an open uni degree - never too old so get yourself signed up

AragornsManlyStubble · 28/08/2017 10:39

I guess I just feel that I failed before, what would be different now. I'd love an actual career but just can't seem to get past this hurdle.

Have you tried Adult Literacy and Numeracy? A level 2 pass is a GCSE B grade equivalent. (Or was until the shake up this year)

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 28/08/2017 10:45

B/C for English, was predicted an A but had to escorted out of the exam so my coursework carried me through.

Do you mind me asking - how did you get a final grade of B/C ? UK GCSEs are not graded like that. And if you have a final grade of B or C, why do you need to resit it to get an A? hoping you'll tell me without me asking why you were escorted out as accompanied toilet breaks etc are allowed

grandOlejukeofYork · 28/08/2017 10:47

You don't say how old you are so how can anyone comment if you are too old? Confused

Peanutbuttercheese · 28/08/2017 10:51

If you take the adult maths and English exams I know that it's free as your current grade has not hit the target C that the Government is pushing as a national target.

I had an undergraduate who was in his eighties once, he was doing a further degree as found being retired boring.

Do you think the issue is more with your attitude to learning its rare to be asked to leave an exam.

AragornsManlyStubble · 28/08/2017 10:52

B was for Literature.
C was for language.

I spent two years working my arse off for my coursework and every piece was A*. I want my A. Silly I know, I got an acceptable grade, but it wasn't the A I knew I could have. I was escorted out as I had a meltdown in the middle of the exam. I'm 29, which I know isn't old, but to do what I'd want to do would be a long path and GCSE's just the beginning.

I tried again 3 years ago. Each piece of coursework received the highest mark possible. I just couldn't face failing the exam again and walked away. There were underlying stresses at home which contributed but that was my main reason. I wasn't asked to leave the exam.

I failed my maths gcse and it stops you going to university. I went to night school and did it. I went on to get a law degree at one of the best universities in the country and a MSc. It you have a long-term career plan, get started now. You're not too old. I also had to do my a levels alone too. Carpe diem.

grandOlejukeofYork · 28/08/2017 11:39

As a mature student you don't need GCSE's and A-levels for many courses, you just need to prove academic ability to do the course. I'd be looking at pre-university courses if I were you rather than GCSE's, which are a bit pointless at your age.

ImperialBlether · 28/08/2017 11:41

You need to look at a two year Access course at your local college, OP. Nobody's bothered about GCSEs once you're out of your teens.

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 28/08/2017 12:10

B and C are both good grades for English. It sounds as if you are better at coursework than exams, so it might be worth remembering that the new English GCSEs have no coursework element - just exams.

Gorgosparta · 28/08/2017 12:12

At your age no one cares about your gcses.

Bur if its more a personal thing, then do it.

Although, do you have to pay? What set up have you got at home? Partner to consider, kids, budget?

HarHer · 28/08/2017 12:20

Hi,

29 is not too old at all. Do an Access course. I think you can do the Maths simultaneously. If not, there may be a pre-Access course which you can do to prepare for the Access and to get the required grades in Maths (you have the English qualifications already).

I started university when I was 30, through the Access route.

AragornsManlyStubble · 28/08/2017 12:29

I wanted to do an access course but it said I needed the GCSEs to apply.

No honey, I'm about to register for gcse maths. Previously two Ds, then an E on the final non try Smile

AragornsManlyStubble · 28/08/2017 12:50

I so want to have something I've done all by myself just for me to feel proud of. I woke up and realised that all I have that I've done alone is some tattered sheets of paper under my bed marked by a kind English teacher 13 years ago. It's not enough any more.

You already have the GCSE grade requirements to do an Access course, they usually ask for a C or above.
You could of course re-do your GCSEs alongside the Access course. Age doesn't come into it, it's never too late. Good luck!

AragornsManlyStubble · 28/08/2017 17:33

But I need a C gcse in maths too, as well as English. I don't have that yet.

I didn't have any GCSEs (educated abroad), but just had a word with the tutor who gave the interview for joining the Access course and she agreed I could take the GCSEs alongside, as long as I had acquired them by the end of it. Turns out, I didn't need to. But then again, the uni I later applied to would have taken me without having done the Access course aswell. Sometimes if you don't ask, you don't get. But if it's for personal achievement only, go ahead and do it.
