To ask what to buy my godson for his 18th birthday?

It seems much harder to buy for boys than girls on landmark occasions.

I don't want to waste money on something he'll never appreciate but nor do I want to (just) give him alcohol.

For a girl, I'd get a good piece of jewellery. With a budget of around £75 I'm struggling to find something comparable.

I'm bookmarking I've got a soon to be 18yr old son who is so hard to buy for

niknac1 · 27/08/2017 22:32

How about a gift of the money for him to put towards something more expensive?

SparkyBlue · 27/08/2017 22:41

My nephew just turned 18 and we just gave cash. He is starting university soon so I reckon he will need the cash more than anything. He was absolutely thrilled with it.

PlausibleSuit · 27/08/2017 22:44

Fountain pen?

4sausages · 27/08/2017 22:45

DS is about to turn 18 and wants a new phone - fair enough as he's had his for years but doesn't feel like an 18th sort of present if that makes sense? I'd like to get something etched or engraved but can't think what!

Cuflinks
Watch
Take him for an experience thing.

NotInMyBackYard1 · 27/08/2017 22:46

Posh cufflinks / a nice wallet with his initials stamped inside / an engraved tankard

Thelightoverthehill · 27/08/2017 22:47

A watch. Premium bond.

7ways · 27/08/2017 22:51

Leather passport holder / document wallet thing

suitcaseofdreams · 27/08/2017 22:56

A first (or limited) edition of a book - one he loves if he's into books, if not something classic. Nice to have and if he really doesn't want it, he can prob make a bit of money out of selling it!

Or a small piece of art - painting or sculpture etc?

We do proper Swiss Army penknives for our 18 year olds - usually quite a small/ simple one that can go on a keyring.

PoppyH56 · 27/08/2017 23:05

I asked my 21 year old brother what he would've wanted at 18 and he said simply 'money. None of those crap 18 engraved glasses or anything. I have no idea what I want at 18 and don't appreciate grown up gifts. I just wanted money to keep for when I saw something I wanted."

So there you go 😂😂

Bananamama1213 · 27/08/2017 23:07

Money. At 18, I just wanted money to treat myself with what I wanted!

I was brought a charm bracelet with an 18 charm which I loved - but then you can't buy a male that!

I don't think they appreciate the well thought gifts.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 27/08/2017 23:10

Are you close? Is he sentimental? Many think boys can't be for some reason. I know some that have kept personalised engraved owns/ bottles/ watches/ ties well into adulthood and become more important after the person died ( wishing you a long life none the less. OP!)
