Just to let him sleep on his side?

After twenty minutes of wriggling and outrageously loud grunting (in his sleep!), DS2 (7 weeks) has finally managed to roll on his side. He's been trying for the last three nights, waking everyone else in the process, but this is the first time he's actually managed it. Do I applaud his efforts and get some sleep, or put him back on his back and restart the madness? DS1 only ever slept on me, so I'm unsure what to do with a baby in an actual crib...

Pic for general squishyness Grin.

He is utterly adorable!

I always left mine to it once they could roll by themselves. May not be totalmofdicial advice though!

MrTrebus · 27/08/2017 22:20

Aww but he looks so happy and comfy. I would have to put him on his back but we also have a breathing sensor mat just to stop me over worrying. I can't imagine my baby sleeping on me either though so each to their own, he's obviously comfy like that. Good work for a 7 week old!

lindauk5 · 27/08/2017 22:22

What a cutie. Personally I'd leave him, my daughter slept much better when she managed to sleep on her side. Enjoy the sleep whilst you can.

booloobalooloo · 27/08/2017 22:22

Mine did this. I spoke to the health visitor and she said leave them if they get themselves there. Don't wake a stepping baby.....

oldlaundbooth · 27/08/2017 22:23

Obviously a stealth boast Grin

booloobalooloo · 27/08/2017 22:23

SLEEPING baby!

geekone · 27/08/2017 22:23

Can you place something in front of him to stop him rolling over? I think that is normally the issue with side sleeping if they tip over and can't roll back easily. Well done him though my DS didn't roll till 7 months totally not interested wanted to just sit up.

TheBiscuitStrikesBack · 27/08/2017 22:24

I'd roll a blanket and pop it under the sheet against him, iykwim, to stop him rolling onto his front and then get as many zzzzz's in as I could.

TheBiscuitStrikesBack · 27/08/2017 22:24

He's lovely btw.

ghanchi · 27/08/2017 22:25

Oh, so peaceful and innocent - let him be...

Helendee · 27/08/2017 22:25

Beautiful boy. I would leave him as he is personally. Have a good night.

Sashkin · 27/08/2017 22:27

He's gorgeous! I'd flip him back personally, but DS(20weeks) still can't roll over so this is all theoretical.

Scrowy · 27/08/2017 22:27

Leave him. Ifwhen he wakes up again put him back on his back. And repeat.

He is adorable Flowers

chickhonhoneybabe · 27/08/2017 22:27

Aw he's gorgeous!

The official advice to help prevent SIDS, is to put baby back to sleep on their back, until they can roll from back to front on their own.

So, I'd probably gently try and put him back on his back as he's still only little.

Fucky · 27/08/2017 22:27

Omg leave him! He's obviously gifted Wink

Hendersonsisnotrelish · 27/08/2017 22:29

DD slept on her side from a few days old. I always put her down on her back but she nearly always ended up on her side.

One HV was horrified. The midwife said it's actually a more natural sleeping position, something about being more vulnerable in the wild if major organs are face up. I'm not sure who was right but DD was fine and I think as long as you put him down on his back it's fine. Enjoy the peace

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 27/08/2017 22:29

Totally old Grin, although more that he's sleeping than that he's rolling. I'm still vaguely traumatised by the first three months of DS1's life when he woke at least every hour round the clock...

Anyway, I went and found a cellular blanket, rolled it up carefully to stop him going on his tummy, placed it with ninja-like stealth... and he immediately rolled back on his back. So panic over! Now I'm just going to be waking constantly all night to check he hasn't done it again. Though suspect the grunting will alert me long before he manages it!

He is gorgeous op!!!!

chickhonhoneybabe · 27/08/2017 22:31

Sorry meant to say put him back on his back until he can roll from back to front and back again, on his own.

Please see official guidance below.

statetrooperstacey · 27/08/2017 22:31

When i had my first baby the guidelines were to make sure they slept on their sides. You could buy special foam wedges or were told to roll up a blanket or towel to put behind them to make sure they didn't roll into their backs because if they slept on their backs THEY MIGHT DIE. Couple of years after that guidelines were to ensure babies slep in their backs because otherwise THEY MIGHT DIE.

Seriously I would leave him on his side, especially as he has managed to get on his side under his own steam ( very impressive!)The first aid recovery position is on the side is it not? Doubt he could end up on his front because his arm would stop him.

TheweewitchRoz · 27/08/2017 22:33

Definite stealth boast - he's gorgeous Grin.

Personally I'd leave him be if he can get himself into that position. Totally agree with pp - never wake a sleeping baby.

chickhonhoneybabe · 27/08/2017 22:36

Sorry... it's also not advised to put things in the baby's cot to stop them from rolling, as it can cause them to over heat.

Please read the official advice, or speak to your midwife or health visitor.

chitofftheshovel · 27/08/2017 22:37

Both of mine were tummy sleepers, it seemed a much more natural sleeping position for them. And yes, as pp said, its to do with babies instinctively protecting their organs.

AreWeThereYet000 · 27/08/2017 22:41

My baby sleeps on her side. Few first nights she did it I kept rolling her onto her back but it just caused disrupted sleep for us both. I leave her now and just check on her before I go to bed, if I get up for the loo etc.

He's gorgeous by the way!

Lelloteddy · 27/08/2017 22:42

Does he settle when he's on his back?
