Hi All

I love Mumsnet and all the brilliant discussions, but am getting totally lost with the the abbreviations, what s YANBU AIBU DH ds dd etc, some are obvious, but when people seem to start abbreviating most words I can actually read threads! Can some one help please-is it awful to say can we just use proper words and not the abbreviations? Its just so I can read and enjoy more threads :-)

You will see RTFT quite a lot when a thread has moved on and someone posts and it's obvious they have only read the OP (Opening Post/Poster) RTFT means Read The Full Thread but must admit I always read it as Read The Fucking Thread Smile

I read STBXH as 'stab the bastard ex-husband' for years. I have no idea why

Omg I'm glad it's not just me Sun 😂

MerchantofVenice · 27/08/2017 22:12

The one that has been driving me mad is 'FWR' in the context of the feminism boards(which I read a lot). I think it stands for Feminism/Women's Rights? But nowhere are any of the boards actually called this?? People throw 'FWR' around all the time and I've been trying to find out why.

PlausibleSuit · 27/08/2017 22:16

@Merchant I know that one as 'for whatever reason' but in a different context. Not sure if it's the same usage.

BewareOfTheToddler · 27/08/2017 22:21

What's TL:DR? I know it indicates a summary of the full thread but not sure what it actually stands for!

CockacidalManiac · 27/08/2017 22:23

Too long; didn't read

BewareOfTheToddler · 28/08/2017 08:43

Thank you! Makes perfect sense!

I copy on my iPhone which will be similar to an iPad. Select the text by holding your finger on the bit you want. Then use the two ends to choose the text.

To highlight, as a PP said, you need to put a * before and after. Must be immediately before, no spaces or it won't work.

On my phone, there is an I in italics under the reply box. If you click on that, you can see the shortcuts for underlining, etc. You can click on them or use the symbols on your keyboard.

FFS - for fuck's sake

FOTTFSOF - fuck of to the far side of fuck

FML - fuck my life

AF - as fuck

I swear a lot. 'Pologies.

the biscuit emoticon doesn't mean you take the biscuit.
As far as I know it's after Gordon Brown came on here for a web chat and one of the questions posed was what biscuit he preferred.
He completely dodged the question, wouldn't answer, became a bit of a joke.
So the biscuit emoji is "no comment" aka "I can't even be arsed to reply to that question."
I clearly spend far too much time on here lol.

HTH (hope that helps)

WTF - with the family
HTH - hope that helps (usually sarcastic)
YMMV - your milage may vary.

The reason the internet, not just MN, uses the D in DS and DD for example is due to scanning. They're shortened because they're so commonly used but if we used just H or S or D, we find it harder to scan in a sentence. The double letters deal with this issue. I never read it as dear anything. DH just means husband and DS is son and so on. You get used to it. And having our own abbreviations and acronyms makes us a community. The language signifies membership of the community.

ShowOfHands · 28/08/2017 10:15

And yes the biscuits originally meant no comment but it's evolved. Giving a biscuit now implies many things depending on context.

StewPots · 28/08/2017 10:25

One that's bugging me is IIRC ?

RandomDent · 28/08/2017 10:27

I just don't use them.

amazonEcho · 28/08/2017 10:44

Pfb is precious first born and implies you are being incredibly over protective.

VadenuRewetje · 07/03/2020 15:29

what is ODFG - is it related to ODFOD?

crapette · 07/03/2020 16:45

I would guess it is Oh Dear Fucking God.

Nanny0gg · 07/03/2020 16:47

WTF - with the family

Say what?

Not in my dictionary it's not!!

In most instances across the web it's What The Fuck

Mandyjack · 29/12/2021 19:00

@Mollypolly2610

What is MILF?
That's used quite widely outside of Mumsnet. It's Mother I'd like to f*ck Often used by younger men for an older lady
HilVicMin · 09/10/2024 12:45

I agree, 100%. Some abbreviations are obvious but they proliferate like mad, leaving readers wondering what it all means!!!

Abitofalark · 09/10/2024 12:50

Coastalcommand · 27/08/2017 19:40

Why do we have to have the whole DS DM DD thing? Would anyone actually call them 'dear son'? Is this an Americanism? It sounds horribly twee, and by the time you've capped up the letters isn't much shorter than writing 'mum' or 'son' out properly.

No it's 'Darling' and it's not an Americanism. It's English, from the upper echelons, eagerly adopted by musmsnet users for some reason.
