Aibu to be furious at my landlord

Last night whilst putting away shopping our kitchen cabinet completely slide off it's hinges and hit me across the jaw and shoulder. After making sure I was okay dh noticed that the fittings on both sides of wall were missing screws with one being put on completely slanted. I'm happy I only walked away with a bruised jaw and shoulder being 20 weeks pregnant it could have been a lot worse if I was standing directly in front. Are we being unreasonable to be furious and request the rest of the cabinets fittings be checked.

Of course YANBU. Astonished you need to ask the question.

ZaraW · 26/08/2017 10:15

Depends how long have you lived in the property? If you haven't noticed the problem before then I'm assuming the landlord has no idea. YANBU to get the issue fixed.

flumpybear · 26/08/2017 10:16

I'd be ringing him now and telling him what nearly happened and he needs to do something in the next 7 days or you'll take further action

In the meantime empty other cupboards and see if they're lose too

Bluntness100 · 26/08/2017 10:19

Yes I think unreasonable because you have no idea if he knew or not. The cabinet could have been fixed by a previous tennant or even a previous owner.

I've rented our properties and you don't go checking how the kitchen is installed. Either between tenants or when you buy. Not unless there is an obvious problem and clearly there wasn't or you would have spotted it.

So yes to be fuming at the landlord at this stage is unreasonable.

Throwaway20 · 26/08/2017 10:22

We wouldn't be angry if the cabinet had been installed properly but that whoever installed the cabinet didn't bother to screw it in properly.

Northernparent68 · 26/08/2017 10:44

Why are you angry, do you really think your landlord knew about this ?

ShatnersWig · 26/08/2017 10:50

Northern Most landlords don't allow tenants to put up shelves or cabinets. It's possible the previous tenant did some shit repair job or a cabinet the landlord installed previously, but that's not the current tenant's problem.

ZaraW · 26/08/2017 10:51

But if you didn't notice the problem why are you annoyed at the landlord? They probably had no idea either so yes YABU.

FallingOrbit · 26/08/2017 11:04

To get him to fix it is perfectly reasonable.

To be furious with him is not. He was probably unaware of the problem, you have to give him the opportunity to put it right. Handle it well and you may even get a good will gesture in the form of a discount on your rent for a month or something.

BarbarianMum · 26/08/2017 11:04

I think you are being a bit unreasonable to be furious. We had a similar incident at work a couple of weeks ago. Kitchen's been installed for over 10 years. Until the cupboard came down no one knew it had been wrongly installed in the first place.

buggerthebotox · 26/08/2017 11:28

I agree it sounds as though it's happened before and has been fixed inadequately by a previous tenant. Realistically, a landlord cannot be held personally responsible for every eventuality.

Yabu.

Justdontknow4321 · 26/08/2017 11:30

You sound way over dramatic

Whinesalot · 26/08/2017 11:41

Yep, annoyed that it happened - ok. To be furious at the LL when he probably didn't even know is unreasonable. I wouldn't know about the state of the cabinets in the house we rent out. Presumably there was no indication that anything was amiss or you would have noticed beforehand.

littlemisssweetness · 26/08/2017 16:41

Yes yabu, he probably didn't even know that the cabinet wasn't installed properly. Ask him to take a look and make sure the rest ok sure but I wouldn't take it out on him

Bit pointless raging at the ll. I get that you're upset, but I doubt the ll deliberately made the cupboard unsafe. I've just got the carpet fitter out to my tenants because it was loose on the stairs and IMO, extremely unsafe, despite the tenant telling me it was fine! I would hate for any harm to come to my tenant because I had left something deliberately unsafe.

LottieDoubtie · 26/08/2017 16:53

Whether or not I'd be raging with the landlord would depend on the bigger picture-
When was the kitchen installed?
Does the landlord generally use cowboys or are they generally reliable etc...

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 26/08/2017 16:57

As a student we had a new cupboard in our crappy kitchen, put up by the landlord's handyman. One night my housemate put a plate in it and the whole thing slid down the wall: we ended up frantically emptying it while he propped it up. The handyman came back with extra screws and bloody superglue
