Boyfriend says I'm being dramatic ..

Jad234 · 26/08/2017 07:22

Just moved into new place and this is the ceiling, random tiny pieces are falling off.
I'm worried the whole thing may fall down,I was going to ring H/A but boyfriend says I'm being dramatic and they wouldn't rent it out if it was dangerous...
What do you think?
Can anything be done?

They could be polystyrene tiles which are a big fire risk.

endofthelinefinally · 26/08/2017 07:26

I was going to say the same thing as olivia.

Jad234 · 26/08/2017 07:26

They remind me of the white bits you get in boxes (if that makes sense)!

Your boyfriend is very naive.

Jad234 · 26/08/2017 07:27

Sound like polystyrene ceiling tiles, which are a fire risk. You're not being dramatic AT ALL. Regardless of what they are made of you shouldn't have bits of ceiling falling off, and if they are polystyrene they're best being removed. Don't try taking it all off yourself though, talk to landlord or estate agent before doing anything.

memove · 26/08/2017 07:33

And a respiratory risk too. Definitely report to landlord.

Jad234 · 26/08/2017 07:33

I wasn't even thinking they were a fire risk till now I was just thinking that bits may continue to fall off.
Il ring first thing Tuesday.

Yep they look like polystyrene ceiling tiles, they will have been stuck on the actual ceiling so structurally they ceiling should be sound and not about to fall on you but as others say, could be a fire risk.

Pollypudding · 26/08/2017 07:37

They do look like poorly fitted polystyrene tiles/ they were very popular in the 70s. I don't think they are illegal but they might be a fire hazard. I would remove them - YANBU

MrsOverTheRoad · 26/08/2017 07:39

Didn't you notice them when you viewed?

Is it privately rented or council?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 26/08/2017 07:40

They need removing, you are not being dramatic.

Pollypudding · 26/08/2017 07:40

Take a bit that has fallen off into the garden- set it on fire ( controlled conditions of course), show your boyfriend- think he will change his mind about how dramatic you are being when he sees how polystyrene burns!!

HerOtherHalf · 26/08/2017 07:42

What a perfect hiding place for spiders to nest. Not wanting to freak you out or anything.....

Ikabod · 26/08/2017 07:45

Some landlords aren't as fussed about their tenant's safety as they should be - get it checked out, for your own piece of mind if nothing else.

flumpybear · 26/08/2017 07:48

Definite fire risk - get the land lord / HA to change them for something safe

Jad234 · 26/08/2017 07:48

I popped my head quickly in each door,I was just so excited to be finally getting out of previous house that I didn't really take much in.
The rest of the house the ceilings are normal except small bedroom.
This will be our daughters room too so don't want to take any chances.
Luckily she's in with us at the moment.

We had those. They are probably stuck on with 5 blobs of glue. And it was a nightmare scraping the glue bits off. Had to get replastered in the end. Don't offer to do it yourselves!

Jad234 · 26/08/2017 07:50

Could a mouse or anything get in from that Ceiling too? 😱

Mushroomburger17 · 26/08/2017 07:58

We had them too. Used a wallpaper scraper and they came off fine. We didn't even need to replaster. Just a bit of sanding. It came up in our survery and we were advised to remove. Not sure what you can do if the landlord won't remove them.

guinnessgirl · 26/08/2017 08:03

Echoing everyone who's said they are a fire risk. They're a bugger to remove, though - definitely a job for landlord.
