To wonder who writes the BBC News 24 news ticker?

And why it takes hours for any grown ups to check it and correct the typos? Surely someone at the BBC knows how to spell? Why don't they run it through a spell checker before broadcasting it? Tonight's clanger is "grevious bodily harm". Where do they get their staff?

It used to shock me. Sadly I'm now used to it.

I've got a mate who does subtitling for the Beeb - I often see stuff that I know they wouldn't let pass. You've got to wonder if some of the errors are down to voice recognition not working properly.

ElizabethG81 · 25/08/2017 22:43

How hard is it to correct though? This particular error has been up for at least an hour. Is no-one in the newsroom even glancing at the screen? Do they not know it's wrong, or do they just not give a fuck?

Yes, I am watching BBC News 24 on a Friday night.

Elizabeth

I reckon it's because it's Friday night and they reckon no one ever watches it on Friday nights.

So let the office junior and the car work on it.

They didn't take your dedication to current events into account Grin

RJnomore1 · 25/08/2017 22:46

Cat. The cat works on it with the office junior.

If a car worked on it it would need to be KITT.

ElizabethG81 · 25/08/2017 22:49

Grin I'm going to end up on that news review programme complaining about the falling standards, aren't I?

Once they were showing the Remembrance Day events at the Cenotaph, and the subtitles said that someone had just 'laid a reef'. Hmm

42isthemeaning · 25/08/2017 22:58

They spelled 'dozens' incorrectly earlier on today 'douzens'! Grin

allegretto · 25/08/2017 23:00

Pinkglitter Grin I think it's automatic word recognition that's often the problem although one of my favourites was when "once more unto the breach" was subtitled as "once more under the bridge".

BrightOranges · 25/08/2017 23:00

I saw 'to buy' as 'Dubai' 😂

SnickersWasAHorse · 25/08/2017 23:04

The subtitles of the news and live stuff aren't typed by people. As said above it's word recognition stuff.

However one of the best ones I saw was on a Welsh language channel and I had the English subtitles on. There were about 4 people talking and they were using a different colour for each person.
They were talking over each other and the subtitles were getting far behind. In the end the subtitles just said 'I don't have a clue, I give up'.

Athousanddiamonds · 25/08/2017 23:49

I saw on subtitled news Ed Miller Band Grin

Is he any relation to Steve?

Totally justifies the £147 per year...
