Playing on 'racism'.

A colleague, mid 20's, first generation (non EU) migrant, born in the UK, educated in the UK, has British citizenship, first language is English, married to an Englishman - she is British, and I get that she identifies with her parents home culture and there is a strong ethnic group in this area.

I have the same background as her - different culture but same background.

So, it doesn't matter what you are talking about, no matter how innocuous she will affect a coquettish look, twinkly laugh and come out with "I'm thick, me, I came here on the last boat" Hmm or "Don't look at me, I'm foreign" Hmm . There are variations on this theme "I'm dyslexic, that's why I teach drama not English". She really plays on the thick immigrant thing if she doesn't want to do something.

I really want to pull her on it without me being accused as being some sort of racist bully.

AIBU to ask you sharp tongued ones for some phrases that point out she's being a twat somewhat disingenuous?

Yes.

Papafran · 25/08/2017 20:25

She sounds like a dick.

Perfectly resonable to ask for put downs for tedious, entitled millennials (like your colleague)

Nuttynoo · 25/08/2017 20:35

I'm brown, first generation of my family to be born here, and yet have never been treated like a local or anything other than foreign. Am always asked where I come from and they aren't talking about my birthplace but my parents/ethnic groups. She can bloody well identify and use any language she wants to describe herself. You have no right to intervene, even if you are the same colour as her.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 25/08/2017 20:38

No one mentioned colour. I merely said she's non EU. Last time I looked British people come in all creeds, colours and religions.

Why don't you just laugh and say 'pull the other one, you are as British as I am!' Then laugh some more. Btw I am a dyslexic Drama teacher. Grin

Could always just straight up ask her why she feels the need to bring up her background when no one else cares
