To think Jeremy Vine is becoming a bit of a dick

I used to quite like Jeremy Vine but just recently he seems to have fallen victim to foot in mouth disease. A couple of months ago he suggested that the perpetrator of what had been classed as a terrorist offence might actually just have been "a nutter". Clearly this kind of terminology is offensive to anyone suffering from a mental illness but as I'm not one of the professionally offended I just took it as an unfortunate choice of words. Then on Tuesday he did a feature about people who move out of their houses leaving a mess for the new occupants, saying that these are "middle class people" - obviously suggesting that this kind of behaviour was only to be expected from the working classes who clearly live like sewer rats. I didn't hear the whole programme in either case so don't know if anyone picked him up on it but am I alone in thinking the powers that be should be having a word?

I love Jeremy vine

RolfNotRudolf · 25/08/2017 22:22

Are you sure he's married to a DM journalist? According to wiki he's married to a BBC journo. Are you thinking of DM writer Sarah Vine, who is married to Michael Gove?

IvorHughJarrs · 25/08/2017 22:33

I don't mind him. Can't bear Liza Tarbuck or Claudia Winkleman

Have to say I don't think Radio 2 is a patch on what it was in the days of Terry Wogan and co

vichill · 25/08/2017 22:34

For all his faults he isn't married to the grotesque Sarah Vine of DM fame. I bet that his real wife isn't a million miles off though.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 25/08/2017 22:43

Ah, my bad. He is in fact married to a BBC journo.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 25/08/2017 22:44

He just seems so nibbling on the edge of DMville...

RhinestoneCowgirl · 25/08/2017 22:45

And it's Friday night and I've had beer.

Redcrayons · 25/08/2017 22:51

Little known fact, he's been on Strictly.

Vanessa is much better when she's filling in.

Plainlycrackers · 25/08/2017 22:54

Drives me wild when he appears to deliberately get the wrong end of the stick... or is he really that thick?? (So tempted to call him disintelligent a la Sam Fox!😂)... don't listen anymore... he's even more irritating than Ken Bruce!

FrenchRoast · 25/08/2017 22:55

He's a very Daily Mail dick and he has got worse over the years.

Postagestamppat · 25/08/2017 23:03

I like him but he is a bit thick sometimes. Years ago he had on a guest who said that his first 6 weeks in prison were so tough and scary, but after that he got used to it. Jeremy Vine then came up with the brilliant idea that people should only ever be sent to jail for 6 weeks max. Murder? 6 weeks because after that you will represent no threat to society because you'll be too scared of prison to do anything bad again. Seriously!

rabbitcakes · 26/08/2017 00:02

Becoming a dick? He's been deep in dickdom for eons. The guy is a first class dick.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 26/08/2017 00:43

It was so much better when Jimmy Young did this slot and paraphrased the callers' thoughts rather than letting irate frothing ramblers go on and on and on.

Jeremy Vine is dreadful. Vanessa does a much better job of it.

Arealhumanbeing · 26/08/2017 03:34

Yup. He's a big jobby. 😂

Has absolutely always been a big massive Dick.

He does this weird elaborate performance of neutrality during the phone in but is so obviously stirring it up and encouraging the Daily mail lot.

quercuscircus · 26/08/2017 04:42

He is a monumental dick. He makes me so angry that I can't listen to him. He seems to take such a horrible delight in playing devil's advocate and being so thick :( exactly as you have all said; Daily Mail-esque. He and the show is an embarassment to the BBC. Argh :(

I LOVE Paddy o'Connell. I should make more effort to listen to his other shows. He did a TV show some years ago with Claudia Winkleman and they were hilarious. Smart, funny and irreverent. I'd love to see them back together. I love Claudia too. She is wonderful, so human and very smart :)

To be fair to Jezza, he is not the only one to have expressed that idea. Obviously it wouldn't apply to criminals who pose a continuing threat or whose crime is so bad that there has to be a long sentence, but in the case of low level crimes, especially first offenders, a short sharp shock is considered to be a better deterrent to a longer sentence (say 12 months) which is way more expensive to the state.

I'm not defending Jezza by the way. In fact I have a theory that at least 75% of Jeremys in the public eye are dicks. I'm thinking of Vine, Clarkson and Kyle - Paxman represents the other 25%.
I'm not sure where Irons sits on the dick-decent divide however. Any other Jeremys around to prove/disprove my hypothesis? Grin

RolfNotRudolf · 26/08/2017 09:55

I don't think Corbin can be included in my study - because although a significant portion of the population consider him to be a dick, another portion consider him to be decent and principled.

RolfNotRudolf · 26/08/2017 09:56

Corbyn not Corbin obviously Blush

MumBod · 26/08/2017 10:10

I can't stand him and never listen - but I accidentally tuned in the other day and heard a glorious story about a man who gave his pet tortoise the kiss of life.

Made my day Smile

slartibartfastsfjords · 26/08/2017 10:14

Who's he married to banana?
I thought for a moment you said he was married to a banana - I'm a bit disappointed now Grin!

RolfNotRudolf · 26/08/2017 10:18

And re Strictly which I saw him on a couple of times - I thought he came across as his partner's sleazy "let's cop a feel and hope no-one's watching" uncle.

CarrieErbag · 26/08/2017 10:20

The only time I hear Jeremy Vine is when the lovely Sean Keaveney plays the odd nonsense excerpt on his breakfast show.

Wauden · 26/08/2017 10:22

Never liked him. People like Kate Adie are the real thing.

ShowOfHands · 26/08/2017 10:22

Jeremy Irons is a total wazzock Rolf.

derxa · 26/08/2017 10:23

He's even a dick on Eggheads. So patronising.
