to think that the life chances of the spice girls should not have depended on who they married.

I wasn't a articular fan, and don't know all that much about them, but they were a fairly successful group, weren't they? Of course its up to them if and when they stop singing, but it seems that everything that has happened to them since has nothing to do with them, and everything to do with their husbands choices and behaviour. I don't think the life path of ex boy band singers depends on their wives.

Maybe somebody can correct me if I am wrong.

Maybe its just media bias, or something

YABU.

Like others have said the VB was far more high profile when she got together with DB and they've since made a joint enterprise of their marriage and family. I personally dislike a lot the way they market their children but I don't get the impression DB is leading on this.

The only other spice girl I'm really aware of is Mel C who is genuinely musically talented and is presumably earning very well.

highinthesky · 25/08/2017 12:37

be extremely choosy about who you allow to get you pregnant

Ne'er was a truer word spoken. If this is what we taught our daughters from birth, perhaps they'd have a bit more self-respect.

AudacityJones · 25/08/2017 12:40

Out of 5 of them only 1 has a partner most of us could name I think. So the least talented (in my opinion) woman in a group gets defined by her infinitely more talented in his field husband. That's fine. The other 4 all seem to be doing interesting things that don't involve riding on the coattails of a partner.

Lucysky2017 · 25/08/2017 12:43

I think they are a good group to analyse and not untypical and I write as someone who earned 10x their other half as a good few women do. In their case if you look at the various situations they are in that shows the variety of situations lots of peoplea rei n - some women earn more, some men earn more, some beaten up by husband etc,.
I have a feeling that the strength of the Beckham family on both sides and involvement of grandparents and sensible business law advice and advice about money is why they are doing pretty well

YABU. Posh invented Becks- not the other way round.

I think that she would have had the same media career regardless of whichever footballer she picked.

MimiSunshine · 25/08/2017 12:51

I don't get the impression DB is leading on this.

Actually I think DB has just as much of not more influence on his kids being in the public eye. I just think he's managed to keep the 'just an east end boy made good' persona going while driving around the west end in a Bentley.

Those leaked emails about his determination for a Knighthood certainly showed the truth behind the mask.

VB suffers from what nearly always happens to successful women and never men is that there determination to succeed is seen as a negative.

A1Sharon · 25/08/2017 12:51

I have certainly never been a massive Spice Girls fan, but I'm surprised at how dismissive some people are of them here. They were massive globally, like really, really massive. And that is not an every day occurance. Yes they were manufactured to the hilt and it was all contrived nonsense, but they did do very, very well. "The Spice Girls have sold 85 million records worldwide,[6][7][8] making them the best-selling female group of all time, one of the best-selling pop groups of all time,[7][9] and the biggest British pop phenomenon since Beatlemania."

MadamePomfrey · 25/08/2017 12:56

Emma married with kids dose presenting radio etc she's more famous than her bloke who actually was in a boy band (jade from damage) who I couldn't tell you what he dose so your statement isn't true there.

Mel C is single I think and has a successful west end career. If she has a bloke no one could name him. Strike 2

Mel B has had it rough lately personally but has been a judge and by presenter on a few successful shows unrelated to her bloke.

Victoria who I'm guessing this is aimed at? Yeah she wouldn't be as famous with out David but I think that goes both ways what She is running a fashion line! He is mainly charity focused I think but I don't think either depends on the other anymore.

Geri hasnt long married if I remember rightly and I couldn't name her husband I know his well off but I don't know anything else about him.

Like then or not they have all made their own paths separate to their husbands. The reason they aren't all still singing having solo careers is because they weren't very good Wink

Looneytune253 · 25/08/2017 12:56

To be fair I don't think dB would have been quite so popular if it wasn't for the 'product' that was their marriage. Not saying the marriage wasn't real or anything but both their profiles shot up when they got together. Both were quite big at the time but it skyrocketed when they got together. As a footballer I reckon his fame would've fizzled out in time without the relationship.

BrieAndChilli · 25/08/2017 12:57

Mel C (sporty) used to live near us in Wales. So she chose to move away from London and all its glamour and have a quiet life with her family (and went into more behind the scenes work such as songwriting) rather than be out every night at clubs and envelope openings. I think her husband was some sort of business man so rich but not famous???
Mel B has only had interest in her relationships because of the drama of them not because of the fame of her partners.
Emma isnwith a ex boy band star and she is more famous than him, think he's a chef now. So don't think being with him has had any impact on her career
Geri has only stayed in the news due to having relationships with rich men, she hasn't really done much tofurther her career
Victoria is the most famous, partly for marrying a famous footballer but also because the actively sought out fame and fortune.

Viviennemary · 25/08/2017 13:14

They all come over as mercenary and self promoting. . Especially the Beckhams. Everything is about money.

Life chances?

Surely they all amassed enough savings and cultural capital to pursue whatever the hell they want?

MapleLeafRag · 25/08/2017 16:21

Poor Mel B - being feisty gobby hasn't stopped her from picking wrong 'uns. I bet Mr B is trying to screw her for as much cash as he can.

TimeafterTimeafterTime · 25/08/2017 20:51

They didn't actually write the Spice Girls hits, did they?

I remember a documentary about Mel B made shortly after she'd divorced the father of her first child. She was showing the film crew around her house and said basically all her money was in that house. So I wonder how much the Spice Girls actually made, given they were a manufactured band.

Mel B did have a child following a ONS with Eddie Murphy so I imagine the child support would come in useful

Geri's husband left his long term partner and baby daughter for her. So much for Girl Power!

MargaretTwatyer · 25/08/2017 23:28

If I could choose any of their lives it would be Emma. She's probably the lowest profile but she's been married to Jade Jones from Damage for years and they both have DJ jobs which are lucrative enough to make them comfortable but not high profile enough to have the hassle of fame.

Poor Skeletor looks so sad and Derek treats her like shit. They seem to think money = happiness. Her kids seem nice enough but also seem to be very money centred.

arethereanyleftatall · 25/08/2017 23:58

Yabu.
Absolute twaddle.

BackforGood · 26/08/2017 00:12

YABU.

Will you let us know what you mean by 'life chances' ?

I'd have thought the biggest thing that changed their lives / gave them the opportunities they had was becoming the most MASSIVE pop group, and all becoming fabulously rich and famous from that. Not sure what any of that has to do with their husbands. Confused

Quartz2208 · 28/08/2017 12:24

It's life choice though isn't it.

VB went for brand and they have stuck together, she along the way making the choice to for her kids, lifestyle and brand.

Mel B is a bit of a car crash but is a rich one, you imagine she would have followed a similar path not being famous

Mel C suffered from low self esteem and thinking she was the least pretty but the most talented, again I think she would have felt this whatever

Emma was always pretty cute and talented, she married safe took a safe path and is happy

Geri I think was body issues

So no I think their choices were based on their self esteem regarding looks and talent and family background that led to their marriage/partner/lifestyle choice
