To worry that this builder might be taking advantage?

Hi there, I am hoping that you can tell me whether the tiler who has quoted today is as expensive as I fear please, and that he might be taking advantage of the fact that I was horribly injured this week slippy on high gloss tiles in my kitchen that now need urgent replacing - or if this is the going rate in SE England ? (2 hrs from London)

Kitchen. 37metres square. Quote includes taking up and removal of existing tiles and then retiling. Tiling quote itself is £925 but there extras are whacking the price up: £210 to supply the latex, £550 to pour the latex, £240 for grout. Total price to retile 37m square kitchen is £1975. I am supplying the tiles, porcelain ones 600 x 600mm.

Advice and thoughts most welcome please? Aibu or is this a normal range?

Sounds like he's taking the piss because that sounds extortionate!! We're hoping to have our whole kitchen (much smaller than yours) redone with new tiling and have been quoted around £4K for the whole thing. And that's in SW London!

FlandersRocks · 24/08/2017 23:32

So the equivalent of £53 per m/sq just to lay them?

Sounds bloody expensive to me.

Foxysoxy01 · 24/08/2017 23:34

Wow, either that is excessively expensive or I should become a tiler!
Either way I would be getting another quote!

LaurieFairyCake · 24/08/2017 23:37

Is it because the tiles might be difficult to get up?

HiJenny35 · 24/08/2017 23:44

I'm in London and we've had 3 separate quotes of £730-£780 to lay a floor in a toilet size 9m squared with us supplying the tiles so that doesn't sound that far off.

Manclife · 24/08/2017 23:44

What's the latex for?

BellaNoche · 24/08/2017 23:49

I think it is a lot. You say he is removing tiles and rubble. Does that include the price of a skip?
And yes, if he is taking up tiles then you will need the latex as a self leveller to restore the tiles again.... but that price and the price of the grout sounds pricey too.
Latex floor can be laid in a day.. self leveller .. makes sense as old tiles are taken up so floor needs smoothing but should be done in a day. Max. round here would be £150 a day labour for professional ( up north)
Why not buy in all the stuff yourself from the likes of Screwfix and see if anyone will give you a labour only quote?

Get a few quotes and ask if you can talk to any of their previous customers (local ones ).

BellaNoche · 24/08/2017 23:50

sorry... that should read "latex as a self leveller to restore the Floor surface prior to tiling"

VeniVidiWeeWee · 25/08/2017 01:08

OP, if you Google anti slip tile treatment there are various products you can get which you can apply yourself.

By the way, I think everyone means square metres.

quercuscircus · 25/08/2017 07:11

I think your best bet would be to get 3 or 4 different quotes. It is the only way you will find out the going rate. Perhaps your neighbours will be able to recommend someone?

It osunds an awful lot, especially if you are supplying the tiles. Some bastards really will prey on your situtation.

Also that it is often said that all the best trades/ builders aren't available at short notice because they are so much in demand - unless they have a cancellation of course.

I'd bear this in mind and try to take your time in choosing someone but I realise that you all need to get the job done. Hope you feel better soon.

quercuscircus · 25/08/2017 07:14

*also need to get the job done, not all.

sizeofalentil · 25/08/2017 07:47

Use my builder.com to get a few more quotes.
