To worry about GCSE results

LuLuuuuuuu · 24/08/2017 18:54

DS went for his results earlier today . He got an X in maths and Us in English (as he didn't sit them) . The course he wants to go on said if he gets a D or above he has a place, but he don't even have a D .

Now I am worried about him getting a place. Its for a practical course rather than academic , but we were both amazed at his score for one of the science segments and business .

He is going to college with the results tomorrow and I am trying to be positive for him. The reason he did not take English and some others is he was a School Refuser and has PDA hence the grades .

If he didn't turn up this can't be a surprise surely? Haven't you looked at alternatives before now?

FWIW there are entry level (pre GCSE) and level 1 courses available at FE colleges so there will be something suitable out there, hopefully not too far from you. There will be others chasing the places though.

Is he ready for work? A level 1 apprenticeship might be an option.

Unfortunately most courses will require at least a D (3 or above)in English and Maths, however he is doing the right thing by going down to the college. If it's worst case scenario maybe he could apply for GCSE English and Maths courses at a local college? If you explain his circumstances to the college then i'm sure they will do everything to make it as comfortable as possible for your son, some colleges even do year long English and Maths courses, meaning that he can complete the course in a year, get the D he needs then start the course next year?

Colleges are generally very good at offering alternative options if the grades required haven't been met.

At my daughter's college (she enrolled today), they offer functional maths and English to run alongside the regular courses. This will provide a qualification to show future employers. Maybe your DS college will offer that too.

Thanks

Titchy, no it is not a great surprise but he was consistent with good maths and English grades in test papers . My son has problems , as I stated so no idea why so bitchy to be honest.

Luckily he does have Maths and English on this course to take, but if its popular and others have what they require, he might not get in . I suppose all I can do is wait and see what tomorrow brings for him when he goes in person.

I don't think titchy was being bitchy- if he didn't sit the papers they won't give him a grade. Did you know he hadn't attended the exams?
I can't comment if they'll take him, it depends entirely on if they're under/oversubscribed.
Good luck on him finding something tomorrow- college will be able to advise, and they will have had children in his situation before I'm sure. Was there any careers advice in school today when he collected the results?

titchy · 24/08/2017 19:53

Sorry wasn't being bitchy at all - I assumed you knew he hadn't sat the exams so not achieving shouldn't have come as a surprise, but of course you might have only just found out now that he didn't turn up. Sorry. Blush

It was the way she said it more then its context Haskell but still, time to move on.

Yes I did know about the exams not taken , as he has PDA and school refusal I , and his teachers to be honest, were just glad he took some of them . I have had years of chaos on that, school meetings, psychiatric appointments, CAMHS and threats of Court , so I , too, was glad he went in for some .

He did not mention about careers advise but he probably didn't take up the offer . In and out of school he prefers

Hopefully he will get assistance tomorrow . Its just a shame he did not get his business course and he is not into science .. Oh well. My DSs life and choice . I will update when I hear more . Thank You

He rung them when he got home Fuckit .
They said to still go in, and still go to the department relevant to him with his results and NI number letter and birth certificate.

You are right, he won't be the only one afterall.

Excellent. Good for him. Hope he enjoys it. :)

LuLuuuuuuu · 25/08/2017 21:23

Thank You humblesims . Weight off my mind I must say and the best of all (due to his school refusal) its only 3 days a week instead of schools 5 . He will be getting his pass, his timetable etc when he starts .

Next week we are also going to do two routes, both of which lead to college, and he can try both when he starts and see which he prefers .

Great news Lul this could easily be my dd in a few years, she has ASD and is academically capable of sitting GCSE's but may not actually cope mentally sitting them, she will only be sitting 3 or 4. I'm glad your ds has got in to college to do the course he wants to do.

Mumteadumpty · 25/08/2017 21:37

Great news to hear LuLu.
