ASD dd is 3 in November. Was still drinking 3-4 pints of milk a night and waking up constantly for it. Did the brutal cold turkey thing 3 weeks ago and now she is still doing rxactly the same but with water instead.

Now what the hell do I do?

Three - four pints per night? And waking for it? Have you had her checked by the GP? Waking through the night with that sort of thirst seems excessive.

PinkHeart5911 · 24/08/2017 10:23

3-4 pints a night, blimey that was a LOT of milk a night!

I think all you can do is carry on with the water and hope she gets bored of waking during the night.

When she wakes in the night do you run straight in with drink or wait a while and see if she drifts back off?

kaytee87 · 24/08/2017 10:27

That seems unusual. I'd ask for blood tests to rule out diabetes

fuckingroundabout · 24/08/2017 10:32

She had blood tests done in July for something else. Wouls that have shown up any diabetes style problems? she drinks like a fish all day and night and actively wakes for it.

Try not giving it to her but she gets hysterical as she is adamant she needs a drink

Take her to the doctor.

Squirmy65ghyg · 24/08/2017 10:33

Sorry missed she has ASD. I still think go back to the GP as that is worrying.

PinkHeart5911 · 24/08/2017 10:33

Take her back to the doctor? 4 pints of fluid a night is a huge amount for a child that isn't even 3 yet

SleepyHeadThisTime · 24/08/2017 10:38

Take her to the doctor - if they rule out any issues go cold turkey with the water too. My LO weaned from milk to water because he liked the feeling of having a full tummy - however once they get past about 9months they shouldnt need ANYTHING overnight (unless they're poorly. It's horrible going cold turkey but necessary for your their sleep and yours.

kaytee87 · 24/08/2017 11:58

It would be separate blood tests for diabetes. If they're anything like the glucose tolerance tests I had in pregnancy they involve a period of fasting before the first blood test then a glucose drink, wait a couple of hours then a second blood test.

fuckingroundabout · 24/08/2017 13:09

I have booked her a GP appointment. Now shes off milk she is looking paler and more tired than ever too which is worrying me :(

Get them to check for anaemia too, surprisingly common in young children and can cause cravings.

fuckingroundabout · 24/08/2017 16:43

She waa recently anemc and had a second follow on blood test which showed still anemic but improvement so was told once the course had finished she would be fine
