I know I am, but am I alone? Paw Patrol

Right, this is really grating my cheese right now.

My kids love Paw Patrol. Obviously. They are 2 and 5, so... of course they do.

They are boys. This is relevant (though it shouldn't be).

Their favourite character is Skye. Probably because she has a helicopter and is a nice bright colour (pink). I can promise you I have not encouraged this in any way (Chase is obviously the coolest imho).

Bought PJs for the youngest DS, he was pleased as punch. Bedtime comes, he puts them on. DS1 is puzzled. "Someone's missing," he says, ominously, pointing to his brother's chest. I spot exactly who he means. There are five pups featured and Skye has been omitted. Presumably she's not a "primary" pup. WTAF? She does way more rescue missions than, say, Zuma. Or even Rocky. Cue me going on a rant about everyday sexism etc etc. To the bemusement of my offspring.

Since then I've noticed that EVERY SINGLE BIT of PP merchandise is the same. If you want a t-shirt, bag, sock, shoe, lunchbox, drinks bottle etc with Skye on, you have to buy one with JUST her (or her and Everest) and it will be 100% pink or purple, or covered in frills. I've got no objection to buying these for the boys whatsoever, but I know that other people think I'm making an aggressively feminist statement with my DS2's pink frilly Skye socks. And he'd be way more pleased with socks that have all the pups together, the whole point of the show is team work right?

Just - why? Why to the manufacturers and designers think boys won't buy PP merchandise with all the pups on? Or that girls (or boys) who want pink and frilly will somehow be put off by the inclusion of the male pups on their things. Kids clearly love the show - they won't stop buying it because there are all the pups on all the things.

Fully prepared to be told 'there are bigger problems in this world' - there so clearly are! This has just been bugging me for a while and I needed to get it off my chest!

It's absolute rubbish, totally agree. Your point about team work is well made. Such a shame the characters get segregated - my 7 yo DS has pointed this out before. He's a massive PP fan and also loves Skye.

That being said, in week 5 of the summer holidays, I owe PP a debt of gratitude for (probably too much) peace and quiet so shan't be protesting them anytime soon Grin

SpiritedLondon · 24/08/2017 11:24

I think one way to tackle it is through social media- it certainly worked with regards the girls/boys Clarks shoes issue last week. In this case though I'm not sure who you would target your tweets etc at.... I guess the makers of the show will just argue they licence the merchandise but don't make it. ( but if there is a Paw Patrol Facebook page etc it may be a start).

Joni234 · 24/08/2017 11:27

Bought a pack of six pairs of socks for my ds. Great, one for each pup! NOPE. Skye was removed and there were two chase pairs. Very annoying.

DS has also been frustrated when trying to play paw patrol with his generic car toys. He has 100s of little cars from various multipack and gifts. Emptied them all out the other day, searched high and low for any kind of pink vehicle and there was none. I tried to explain the reason and ds was very angry about this ! Told me to have a word with the car companies

MetalMidget · 24/08/2017 11:32

My husband never really appreciated how stereotyped kids stuff is until we had our son. He was appalled when he realised that all of the Peppa Pig stuff aimed at boys didn't actually have Peppa on, only George (same as with Paw Patrol), and Go Jetters has only one female character.

swg1 · 24/08/2017 11:33

For that matter, why is Zuma not a girl?

They would have had to change nothing - I thought he was a girl for the first few episodes because the name even sounds vaguely girl-like. Orange is a fairly neutral colour. They'd just have had to refer to him as "she".

Rocky could have been a girl too, they could have had the full 50/50.

Bobbybobbins · 24/08/2017 11:34

YANBU OP as this is definitely blanket everyday sexism.

But YABU to say Chase is the coolest as my favourite is Marshall Grin

Notanotheruser111 · 24/08/2017 11:48

I'm in Aus and we have a small amount of things available with all or her (not in pink) a rash vest, bicycle helmet, tops in grey so there is stuff just not much.

My boys used to love peppa pig and we were lucky enough to get one t shirt that is what I'd term gender neutral before they changed it to all peppa for girls, George for boys.

JuicyStrawberry · 24/08/2017 11:50

My DS has a Paw Patrol t-shirt that has all of the pups on them apart from Sky. My DS loves sky! He loves all of themcand plays with all of his toys including Sky.
And I'm sure there are lots of girls who love Paw Patrol and would also love a top with all of the pups on it rather than a pink glittery one with just Sky on it!

feministrat · 24/08/2017 12:54

@JuicyStrawberry Indeed, and as a parent, if my DD insisted on a Skye t-shirt / socks / whatever, I would much rather buy her some in blue/green/yellow/any colour except pink and purple. So it's not just the parents of boys the marketing company is missing a trick with.

And it's disgusting that you can buy merchandise with all of the pups apart from Skye, clearly saying to boys (and girls) that girls aren't really part of the team.

Questioningeverything · 24/08/2017 12:56

I agree and same with Peppa pig. Ds loves Peppa but even he's started asking why he can't have a Peppa and George pair of wellies for example without them being pink.
I don't get it, these shows are watched by millions. Allow your audiences to enjoy the characters without making them have gender specific colours- you'll make tons more in revenue! I don't care if ds wants to wear pink, but when they say to me mummy why is Skye just for girls I like her too... yeah at that point companies need to address this issue and make it normal for them to produce products that girls and boys will happily accept. Pink for girls blue for boys... yawn. They need to be more creative.

pigletpie29 · 24/08/2017 12:58

My dd's favourite is Everest but there's hardly anything with her on - do you think it's because she's new? We only watch the first two seasons because that's what's on Netflix - is she in it more in the later ones?

Kentnurse2015 · 24/08/2017 13:00

swg1, I thought Zuma was a girl too and actually in Paw Patrol Live, it was played by a female and had very feminine eyelashes!!

BabychamSocialist · 24/08/2017 13:05

'Twas ever thus.

My sons used to love Power Rangers and DS2 was insanely disappointed that you could never get the Pink Power Ranger costume for boys, only girls. Even the T-Shirt versions were all for girls.

justkeepswimmingg · 24/08/2017 13:14

Agree with you OP.
DS (2) loves paw patrol, especially Skye. He's currently wearing a paw patrol top that features all, but Skye and Everest. There definitely is a market for mixing it up, such as less pink for the female characters and including them all together etc. I don't object to DS wearing pink clothing, I just hate the stereotypes, as well as the frills/glitter that comes with it.

Liskee · 24/08/2017 13:38

I honestly hadn't noticed this - but now I can see every bit of PP merchandise in our house has no Skye on it (2 boys too)....I am outraged (politely and probably not enough to do anything about it!)!!

Notanotheruser111 · 24/08/2017 13:57

All paws on deck

Target seems to be the exclusive location

I got these one for my DS. Skye is his favourite!

@SellMySoulForSomeSleep

My daughters favourite pup is Marshall too! I managed to get a nightie from asda with Skye on the front and Marshall on the back ( you can wear it either way round) now it is pink and purple but it made her day and she loves it!

Kentnurse2015 · 24/08/2017 14:25

My daughter's pyjamas have Skye, Everest and Marshall on them for some reason and my son's have the others. My daughter is absolutely mad about Everest at the moment. Drives me potty!!

divafever99 · 24/08/2017 14:27

Completely agree with you op. My girls regularly wear "boys" PJ's/t-shirts because they want George pig, star wars or dinosaurs. Last year Next did a dinosaur range for girls and my DD was so pleased.

Oddsocksforeveryone · 24/08/2017 14:34

I hadn't even noticed but ds's paw patrol cup is in front of me and there's no skye! Might have a look at the other bits, there's paw patrol everywhere in this house, bedding, pj's, flannels toys etc etc
Just checked the fridge, she is on the yogurts lol

MaryWortleyMontagu · 24/08/2017 14:45

I recently bought a paw patrol rucksack. I thought I had found the holy grail as it had all the pups on there (inc skye). Then I realised (I was buying online) that it was advertised as a "boys" rucksack! FFS!!!!

TurquoiseDress · 24/08/2017 14:48

YANBU!

I only noticed Everest recently!
Yes Skye doesn't seem to be integral to the PP team and you're right that anything with her on it has been girly-fied to the max!

Crunchymum · 24/08/2017 14:48

Someone bought DD some Paw Patrol pj's and as they were from the "girls" section they only had Skye and Everest on them? Cue DS being upset as of course his PP PJ's didn't have Everest or Skye and DD annoyed as she didn't have the rest of the bloody mutts.

I have vowed plain PJ's for all now.

Crunchymum · 24/08/2017 14:49

As an aside, Rubble wasn't one the original pups

"We" saw the episode he was found quite recently.
