Aibu to be sad I won't be able to take this job?

I currently work around 3 days a week ish (sometimes a little more sometimes less but that's on average)
4-5 days a week and shorter days (4-7 hours a day vs 8-13)
Local job advertising for a manager (currently a supervisor)
I applied, next day they offered me an interview (interview was yesterday).
I went along, interviewer seemed very impressed and I was really happy.
It's an hourly rate job.
I asked about the pay and got told it's basically NMW (12p an hour more) I make over 40% more than this.

This job is an amazing location (5 min walk vs 30min train and 10 min cycle or 15 min drive) great progression etc offered and I REALLY need the step up this would give but I just can't afford it!

I have a feeling I'll be offered it - only 2 other candidates both of which I spoke with (group interview) neither match my experience (it's a role which includes managing two teams, I've experience supervising/covering for a manager with both sometimes at the same time the other candidates only have one) and I am very local which I know is attractive to them.
I don't think there's much scope for negotiating either - I'd need at least 20% more and apparently pay rates are fixed at this amount.

Aibu to be sad I won't be able to take it, and very slightly miffed I wasted time, childcare and effort for a job I can't even take if offered when they could've just put the salary in the job ad (vs "competitive" ).

I won't be taking it at the wage stated because I can't afford to irrespective of anything else but I'll try to negotiate if offered it.
I doubt it'll get me anywhere but worst thing they can say is no

It can't be that good for 12p above min wage unless they have amazing benefits.

Negotiate. Nothing less than you are on now. Don't be apologetic, you are worth it!

BorisTrumpsHair · 24/08/2017 08:31

12p over NMW is not competitive.

Negotiate. You want the job. They want you. Negotiate. You are worth it! Smile

BorisTrumpsHair · 24/08/2017 08:33

I'd push for an increase in what you are in now. Even a small increase. Know your worth!

Queenioqueenio · 24/08/2017 09:16

TELL them (not 'try' to negotiate) the salary are looking for.
Be really polite but assertive, for Example, "I'm looking for £xxxx to move". If they push it keep saying "No I really couldn't move for less than £xxxxx"
They are taking the pee with the salary they are offering, hoping to get you on the cheap.

solarisIsAClassic · 24/08/2017 09:42

I agree that if you can possibly look long term then it's a savvy move.

I'm too jetlagged to do the maths on my fingers but surely the pay is reasonably similar to yours at the moment. 40% cut for significantly fewer hours.

Could you get a second job? Negotiate overtime? Negotiate the salary enough to make it viable for a cvouple of years?

Zippydoodah · 24/08/2017 09:49

You would be mad to take it. They are overselling it. I would never answer an ad where they don't display the salary

Deemail · 24/08/2017 09:57

The job sounds like what you're looking for but alarm bells would be ringing for me due to the salary.
They sound like a company who will take advantage.

indigox · 24/08/2017 20:57

The salary is seriously questionable, how much of an opportunity can a company give you when they don't value their staff?

BlueDecor · 24/08/2017 21:01

Competitive salary means low just like competitive price.
I'd advise against taking the job. Who on earth even considers a job offer with a forty percent paycut.
If they won't pay you what you're worth then they are not worth you giving up your valuable time to do them the favour of going to work for them.
Value youself.

Zippydoodah · 25/08/2017 01:04

Yes. Tell them to match your current salary

LadyWithLapdog · 25/08/2017 01:11

C'mon. More responsibility for less pay? Take a pay cut for an easier life (shorter commute) but not for more headache. I took a 5% pay cut for a 20 mile shorter commute but same level. And it's back up now and a bit more after one year.

BoysofMelody · 25/08/2017 01:13

Seems like a clear cut case of title inflation in lieu of pay.

It doesn't sound like a step up and despite the 'manager' in the job title, when you apply for the job after this one, the salary will give the game away that it's a pretendy management role.
