District nurse upset my grandma

My grandma has a Bedlington Terrier called Hector. This morning the district nurse was there and was fussing the dog, the dog got excited and nipped her so she told him she was going to make a Hector Sandwich.

I get that it was a joke but my grandma is now upset and worried that the nurse will report the dog and he'll be put down (and made into a hector sandwich). Obviously I've explained this won't happen but can't guarantee the nurse won't report the dog obviously! Before she left she was fussing him and telling him he's her favourite dog so surely she can't be intending to report him?

Grandma is worried sick. AIBU to call the district nurse office and ask her what her plans are for the dog and to gently explain that the sandwich comment has had my poor grandma in knots all day?

Just leave it. And perhaps arrange for the dog to be outside when the nurse calls in future. She shouldn't have to deal with nippy dogs and it sounds like she dealt with it quite well.

Yes, just leave it.

The woman obviously had a sense of humor about the nip, so I can't imagine she's going to report.

Given the nip, it sounds like there needs to be a plan in place for when the nurse visits again, which doesn't involve the nurse fussing the dog tbh.

I would call the nurse, apologise for the nip and mention that your grandma is worried about the dog being reported. And speak about how to avoid this happening again. A quick hello then shut in another room would probably be sensible.

I'd call the district nurse, say how upset your GM is that she was nipped by the dog and will ensure it won't happen again by shutting him in another room. And how worried she is that the nurse is going to report him. And see what she says. I'd be very, very surprised if she did report for a playful nip.

The nurse is a big dog lover, I've been here before when she's visited and she spends more time on the dog than with my grandma. She even brought him some treats one time as her dog had too many. He only nipped in excitement and apparently she said at the time that her dog does the same thing so I don't know what she's stressing about!

The you should really be comforting your grandma

It honestly sounds as though the woman didn't mind the excited nip (I don't mind them either to be honest).

Just keep reassuring her.

christinarossetti · 23/08/2017 17:21

It's really unhelpful to everyone to whip up dogs and then overlook a nip. Someone else might not overlook it, or it might be more than a nip next time.

I would still let her know that the situation upset your grandma - I assume that she doesn't like her dog nipping?

She won't report it but your gran needs to make sure the dog is in another room when the DN's visit. If it nips someone else or worse then obviously the consequences could be worse. I have been a DN and I'm a huge dog lover but I do expect dogs to be put away on visits because you never know how they're going to react, especially when their owner may be in pain during clinical procedures.
