Should we pay?

We're currently on holiday in France in a rented villa. Contract says all breakages must be paid for. Owners are holding a hefty deposit of our money. First day of the holiday, my dh lay on the sun lounger. As he got off it, the stitching tore so the bit you lie on isn't properly attached to the frame. My dh is normal size and didn't do any weird manoevering when he got up. He just lay on it, then got off it i.e used it completely normally. Its not a new lounger and I suspect was on the point of breaking due to normal wear and tear. I think whoever had lain on it next would have broken it.

I suspect the cost of a new lounger will be taken from our deposit. Aibu in thinking this is not OK.

No, it's not OK. Report it to the landlord and say it caused your husband to fall off and when can they take it away and bring a new one?

I don't think it's worth getting in a state about

Take pictures and don't use the rest of the holiday.

I think that should come under wear and tear really.

Had he broken the mechanism, I'd say fair enough but those sun loungers tend to do that after a couple of years of getting wet/drying in the sunshine.

No, YANBU. They should be prepared for things to need replacing as part of normal wear and tear. I would let them know that it has broken though and explain what happened. Things perish quickly in the sun.

Thanks for your comments. It's bugging me more than it really should. We're already going to be charged to replace a parasol that broke when it was blown over by the wind when we were out for the day. There was no wind when we left the house. The owner had pointed out that it could blow over in the wind when we first arrived . He says he also told us that the wind was unpredictable but we hadn't picked this up or we would have kept the parasol down unless we were in the house. Think it probably got lost in translation. We're totally walking on egg shells in case something else breaks. It's kind of putting a downer on what should be a great place to stay. Maybe I need more wine to help me not get wound up by it....

More wine will definitely help! SmileWineWine
