To ask what the name of this food was called at school!

A family member is trying to explain a food item to me that she used to have at school as she used to really enjoy it and would like to have it again but can't remember what it's called or the correct name!

She has described it as " little potato pieces .. that are spiral like a MR Wippy and tend to be crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside'

The other thing she is trying to explain is the following " flatish rectangles ( she things the are rectangle ) and have breadcrumbs on the outside and some sort of tomato on the inside ( but doesn't really have a strong tomato flavour as she isn't a huge fan of tomato!)

Would be grateful if anyone could help her out as I would secretly like to try and cook her this meal again as she said it was always one of her favourites and hasn't had it since first school! ( she is 22 if that's any help)

The tomato things sounds like ravioli to me?

BrutusMcDogface · 22/08/2017 17:35

The tomato ketchup man?! Did she dream that one up?! Grin

BLUESEAPARADISE · 22/08/2017 17:35

Thankyou for your idea but it wasn't ravioli :(

emochild · 22/08/2017 17:38

Pizza pocket?

MissRainbowBrite · 22/08/2017 17:40

Duchesse potatoes, my mum used to do them and put a slice of cheese across the top. Mmmm...I need to get a piping bag or an old fashioned ice cream scoop to make them.

x2boys · 22/08/2017 17:43

Can we go back to the tomato ketchup man why would somebody come to school just to put a dab of ketchup on your tray.

Jux · 22/08/2017 17:45

Gosh, it all sounds divine and very sophisticated for school food! I had school dinners in the 60s; that tended to be half-boiled potatoes or lumpy mash. Spammy tomatoey things would have been beyond our dinner ladies; watery mince was more up their street, and rice pUdding with a blob of jam for pudding.

BLUESEAPARADISE · 22/08/2017 17:46

I have no idea why but she is / was convinced there was a tomato ketchup man but now everyone is saying that she is now doubting herself and thinking she dreamt it considering no one else had one 🙈

I thought it was croquette potatoes (horrible cardboard things) but duchess potatoes were nearly as bad!
What a blast from the past. Hope someone can help your mum remember Smile

I'm intrigued to find out what these flat, rectangular tomatoey things are!

bizzieb33 · 22/08/2017 18:09

Not the 'salmon' fish cakes? They just tasted of tomatoes.

diddl · 22/08/2017 18:23

I was wndering if it wasn't actually "tomato" something as it would seem an odd choice for someone who doesn't like tomatoes much.

Tomato ketchup man??

LineysRun · 22/08/2017 18:26

Can anyone help me with school rissoles?

Does anywhere sell them any more?

BarryTheKestrel · 22/08/2017 18:30

Sounds like hotpockets to me. I used to have cheese and tomato ones and they had a very mild not overly cheesy or tomatoey flavour in a flat rectangle shape.

Spam88 · 22/08/2017 18:31

Lineys get yourself to a chippy in wales

LineysRun · 22/08/2017 19:17

Thank you Spam, that's my holidays sorted Grin

ShmooBooMoo · 22/08/2017 19:25

I'm almost twice her age and remember those at school! Loved 'em! I used to be made up when it was them AND steak pie with shortcrust pastry! Grin

Pizzaexpressreview · 22/08/2017 19:29

My uni college did duchess potatoes!! I'd never had them before or since and would buy them if i could!

I'd assumed they were frozen things but now wonder if they were made en mass in the college kitchen!
