Not to replace babysitter's ipad screen that DD2 cracked

Somerville · 22/08/2017 13:58

DD2 managed to slip over holding teenage babysitter's iPad last night. Complete accident.

It was babysitters decision to bring it - there was no need for her to. And really she should have it in a case. But I digress, because of course I would be unreasonable not to have it repaired.

It's a major PITA because I can't drive right now so I've done long bus journey to nearest town with a repair place (who quoted £60 over the phone) to be told once there that her iPad glass (the latest, 2017 model, which is just called IPad, or colloquially IPad 5) isn't replaceable on its own - they tried to charge me £200 to order in a whole new screen, plus as yet undefined fitting cost. Shock

I'm suspecting/hoping that they were uninformed or trying to con me, but I don't have much signal (on bus home now with tearful DD2) so google research is slow.

6 missed calls from babysitter on when she can expect her iPad back, which I'm dodging until I have more idea. Help me to not be unreasonable and point me in the direction of cost effective and fast way of repairing it please, please, please...

A 10 yo should know better and you most definitely should pay OP.

Somerville · 22/08/2017 19:15

Whew! The parents have cover and are happy to claim. Excess is £100 but that's much better than I thought earlier. Thank you, thank you everyone who told me to check. It reminded me that my own 16yo probably doesn't know that her phone is covered as part of my bank account benefits.

For the enquiringly minds on what actually happened... DD is adamant that they were sitting together taking it in turns to click on cat videos, and eating pizza, and then her hand slipped. Babysitter's version (DD was in bed when I got home) was that dd had slipped over while holding it. But since they both agree it wasn't damaged to start with, and that it slipped from my child's possession, I'm not starting an inquisition - their accounts are close enough.

Phew, happy ending with everyone on good terms.

Allthewaves · 22/08/2017 19:22

Glad you got it sorted. My friend always has ger ipad out when I visit with my kids - super slim, no case. I point and say 'pls put it away'. Mine have armoured covers lol

Lweji · 22/08/2017 19:24

That's great.
Don't forget to tell her that in future she's fully responsible for any items she takes to your home.

Aeroflotgirl · 22/08/2017 19:25

Tell babysitter to get a case for it.

tiggersdontlikehoney · 22/08/2017 19:29

Does sound like the babysitter making out sounds more like your dd, when in fact they were side by side holding it. I assume to make you pay.. So still not sure I'd trust her after this. But all's well and all that

peachgreen · 22/08/2017 19:35

Ah great news OP, and well done on doing the right thing - I can see PP's points when they say you shouldn't have had to pay but I do think it's the right thing to do and you'll feel better for on having done it this way.

Migraleve · 22/08/2017 19:37

I've done long bus journey to nearest town with a repair place

Right...

who quoted £60 over the phone

Ok......

to be told once there that her iPad glass (the latest, 2017 model, which is just called IPad, or colloquially IPad 5) isn't replaceable on its own - they tried to charge me £200 to order in a whole new screen, plus as yet undefined fitting cost.

So, to recap, you were willing to pay for the damage until you realised how much it was going to cost, then suddenly have decided it are not responsible after all Hmm

Flybye · 22/08/2017 19:46

No op knows she is responsible and has said so many times! She obviously wanted to see if the screen shop were overcharging her.

Flybye · 22/08/2017 19:47

And/or to see if she could get it fixed somewhere else cheaper.

Somerville · 22/08/2017 19:48

TBH Lweji I won't use her again. Twenty pounds for babysitting and a hundred for the excess makes it the most expensive night out I've had in a long time - and I was only at a pregnancy yoga session 😂😂

I can't believe some pay are saying it's the babysitter's fault. Are you the kind of people who would sue the council if you tripped over on a loose paving slab in the street too? This mentality really grates on me.

Your child broke it - you should pay to repair it. End of!

ElizabethShaw · 22/08/2017 19:54

I would only use a babysitter who was capable of being responsible for my children, so yes I would hold them responsible Confused. Not sure what it has to do with paving slabs!

Kofa · 22/08/2017 20:17

Somerville pregnancy yoga! I remember your previous thread, This is such a lovely ending. Heartiest congratulations Flowers.

Mittens1969 · 22/08/2017 21:27

I'm really glad you found that out, OP. Good to know that the babysitter's parents had insurance. Always good to check when something is broken.

I would suggest, though, that your DD pays a portion of the excess out of her pocket money - maybe a reduction in her pocket money for a few weeks? It's what I would do with my 8 year old DD. They need to learn to be careful with expensive equipment.

MaisyPops · 22/08/2017 21:28

Agreed.
A 10 year old doesnt gain or lose anything by lying in that situation.
The babysitter clearly felt that a little creativity would push you into paying.

Glad it's all sorted. I wouldnt be willing to use her again after that.

I imagine her parents will have something to sau about her being stupid enough to have an expensive piece of kit and not br arsed enough to put a protective case on it.

SpiritedLondon · 23/08/2017 09:25

So the message here is get a case! Grin

a1poshpaws · 23/08/2017 17:32

Your child broke it - however accidentally - so you should pay for the repair. It's not a question of whether or not she should have brought it - she may have wanted to show things to your DC anyway: teenagers and iPads are pretty much inseparable today, so you should have specifically stated no iPad, no books, no TV etc., etc. if you wanted 100% of her attention on your children.

Evan456 · 23/08/2017 17:39

I'm confused no where in the post does it say the baby sitter gave it to the child! She's a teenager how is she going to afford to repair it, I'm sure everyone takes their phones with them so what's the difference, just get on with it and get it repaired. Teach your daughter not to touch other people's property

Nikephorus · 23/08/2017 17:41

Don't forget to tell her that in future she's fully responsible for any items she takes to your home
Or "don't forget to tell DD to be more careful with other people's belongings"...

mummmy2017 · 23/08/2017 17:49

I'm glad it's sorted, but think your best way to move forward is to say as suggested that this once you will pay, but should her phone or other equipment be damaged then your not willing to cover the costs.

And maybe we should all consider remembering to say the same to anyone who babysits for us .

riceuten · 23/08/2017 17:58

Sadly, the whole tenor of you presupposes that you want people to agree with you and thta it was somehow the babysitter's fault for bringing it. If your DD had torn a dress she was wearing, nomdoubt in your lopsided world, it would have been her fault for wearing it. YABCU.

Migraleve · 23/08/2017 18:06

No op knows she is responsible and has said so many times! She obviously wanted to see if the screen shop were overcharging her.

That's funny, because the actual thread title asks if the OP is BU by not replacing it Hmm

Vichette · 23/08/2017 18:15

This is my local repairer have used him twice think you are being ripped off
