Dehydrated skin SOS

Hi everyone.

A boring AIBU (sorry!) Just wondering what to do about my dehydrated skin on my forehead?

I try to drink a lot of water. I know it varies a lot between people, and that while health guidelines suggest drinking around 8 glasses of 250ml a day (around 2 litres), everyone needs different amounts.

I'm in my mid-twenties, not very active or sporty (should do more sport!), and live in Britain (so a temperate climate rather than somewhere hot). Also drink much less coffee than I used to (now I have a cup of black coffee around every two days or so), and don't drink much alcohol (maybe a couple of glasses of wine twice a month or so).

I've been trying to drink around 2 to 2.5 litres of water a day since I went for a facial a couple of months ago and the beautician said that my skin looked quite dehydrated. I had another facial with them today, and they said that while my skin looks a lot better and is hydrated now, my forehead is still a bit dehydrated.

In terms of skincare, I try to use hydrating products where I can. (Cleansing balm, hydrating toner, serum and day cream during the day, with day cream swapped for night cream and often followed by an overnight mask at night).

Any ideas where I'm going wrong please?

Is it dehydrated or dry? Or both? They're not the same. If the skin feels tight, rough or flaky it's more likely to be dry than dehydrated and you'll need a product that adds oil rather than water (or both) to your skin.

Thanks for your reply dolly :) It's just dehydrated rather than dry as there's no tightness or flakiness.

You'll probably have more luck on one of the beauty forums (there's a really great skincare thread) but a) moisturise when your skin is still wet and b) these are the best masks I've ever used: www.amazon.co.uk/Dermal-Korea-Collagen-Essence-Facial/dp/B009UKS7R4?tag=mumsnetforum-21

I'm your girl Smile Fellow dehydrated person here

You're on the right track with increasing water and cutting back on alcohol and caffeine. Processed sugar does my skin no good either so think about cutting right back if that applies to you. Eating plenty of veg and fruit makes a positive difference to my skin too

Getting as much sleep as you can helps, and exercise is one of the best things ever for making your skin glow

Skin care wise, double cleansing with a warm flannel in the evening, applying products when skin is still damp. Hyaluronic acid is an excellent product for helping the skin retain water - I use the Superdrug Simply Pure hydrating serum or the Hyaluronic product from The Ordinary. Both cheap products but work well.

Good luck and keep posting!

I have horribly dehydrated skin that I mistook for dry skin for years
I second a clean as possible diet, loads of water and sleep. Stress effects me massively. Product wise I use decleor. It's the only thing that's made a difference to me. I use the counter service at my local John Lewis and they usually throw me in a free facial every few weeks.

Do you take any supplements? I use fish oil, vitamin e oil and starflower - or, if you prefer, up your consumption of eg avocado: too low fat a diet makes my skin dehydrated.

I get on much better with products that don't contain many additives. Switching to products from Lush transformed my skin, I look younger at 30 than I did at 24. I recommend you give their cleanser Ultrabland a go, or maybe Ro's Argan for the shower.

The sales assistants are really helpful when you're not sure (and quite annoying when you know exactly what you want!)

Ooh Ultrabland is on my list to try so glad to hear its good for dehydrated skin Sonders.

Totally agree about avocados Fine - nuts too. They make my skin look much more glowy
